Sorting through the raw photos from my camera, the details in this set turned out even richer than expected. The character portrayed this time is Machu, also known as Amate Yuzuriha, from Gundam GQUUUUUX.
Before the shoot, I spent quite a bit of time styling the wig. This short Orange hair with white highlight streaks was sectioned into many individual pieces for styling to look natural and true to character. Costume-wise, a loose white coat was layered over a bright blue stand-collar shirt, finished with a brown diamond-plaid necktie at the collar. For the bottom, a teal pleated skirt was paired with black chunky-soled round-toe boots and black backpack straps, creating a visually distinct, layered look.
The studio set featured a solid orange backdrop wall, with warm-toned lighting illuminating the subject to create an even more vibrant atmosphere. For poses, the first shot was cross-legged with chin in hand, while the second was leaning backward while seated. Compositionally, the second frame makes a much better cover: the leaning-back posture elongates the leg lines, making the silhouettes of the thighs and boots stand out prominently and giving the character a stronger visual presence.
Props were another major highlight of this shoot. The round, white smiling doll with closed eyes, accented with dark trim at the base, had a satisfying heft in hand. Another orange rectangular item was held in palm or placed on the ground beside me. Details on such small props cannot be overlooked, as they bring narrative depth to close-up shots. The photographer offered meticulous guidance on set to keep hand gestures and prop placement as natural as possible, avoiding a stiff, staged look.
As a cosplayer, every time I embody a character, I want to capture their temperament to the greatest degree possible. Machu is a character of great tension, with a gaze harboring a hint of confusion and stubborn resolve. Facing the camera, I deliberately controlled a cool, resolute expression, which, paired with the slightly wavy wig and reddish eye makeup, gave the imagery a youthful yet sturdy edge.
The resulting shots were pleasantly surprising, especially how the lighting reproduced skin tones and costume textures: the white coat looked exceptionally crisp, while the teal skirt gained new depth under the orange glow. The shoot flowed smoothly over about two hours in the studio, mostly spent refining seated angles and adjusting the placement of the tie and backpack straps. From the cut of the garments to the texture of the hair, everything stayed as close as possible to the original character design.
As someone passionate about the Gundam franchise, being able to portray such an alluring character was immensely rewarding. Relying primarily on a solid-color backdrop to let the character and costume details carry the frame was a great creative endeavor. While sorting through these photos, I reflected that cosplay is not just about recreating appearances, but about using costumes and props to immerse oneself into the world the character inhabits.
It was a fantastic photoshoot experience, and given the chance, I'd love to challenge other gear and outfit variations of this character next time!
