Dropping by to share some Mash cosplay convention photos from the Mengka Anime Convention. This shoot was done in collaboration with photographer Huangzu. We found a relatively less crowded spot at the venue where the ambient light was somewhat dim, relying entirely on the on-camera fill light to illuminate the subject, which effectively made the character stand out.
Since I cosplayed Mash myself, I was quite familiar with the makeup and styling. The pink wig was pre-styled, paired with semi-rimless black-framed glasses and blue contact lenses for the eye makeup, highlighted with red eyeshadow beneath the lower lids to match the character's design. The outfit was her classic kouhai attire: a white collared shirt with a red tie, layered with a light blue and white color-blocked hooded jacket, paired with a black pleated skirt and black stockings. Although the exhibition hall was air-conditioned, the bustling crowd made it quite hot. Wearing the jacket had me sweating, but I endured it to stay true to the character.
For props, I prepared a kraft paper sketchbook and a pen, focusing most poses around them during the shoot. The first photo captures a contemplative pose biting the pen, mouth slightly parted with eyes on the camera, as if scrutinizing the person in front. The second is a side-profile pose gently biting the pen with eyes cast downward, pretending to be deeply focused. The third shows holding the pen near the side of the face while looking straight ahead, creating a clean, standard composition. The fourth is looking down pretending to sketch or take notes, which felt very natural due to the subtle movement.
The convention background was quite bustling, but the blurred bokeh lights and crowds in the background added an authentic touch of convention photos. The photographer was great at capturing candid moments and constantly guided my angles and expressions—such as pretending to be lost in thought or suddenly glancing up at him. Because the notebook was open, holding it in hand was sometimes slippery, requiring effort to keep the pages spread open while maintaining my expression. For less experienced cosplayers, using props definitely makes posing much more natural than simply standing stiffly.
I selected four photos to share this time. The combination of black stockings and a pleated skirt worked really well on camera; compared to bare legs, this uniform look fits the character better and brings out her distinct charm effortlessly. During retouching, I avoided excessive anime-style skin smoothing, mainly adjusting color tones to preserve natural skin texture. It was a true pleasure to capture this moment on-site, and special thanks to photographer Huangzu for the patient shooting.
