Bringing this custom interpretation of Remilia from Touhou Project: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to life involved a fairly lengthy preparation period for both costumes and props. Wanting to stay faithful to the canon design while infusing a dark, whimsical Gothic Lolita fantasy aesthetic, I made numerous subtle adjustments. The wig was chosen in soft pastel-blue waves, with bangs layered and styled to enhance dimensional volume. For contact lenses, I chose vivid crimson red; paired with a red-toned makeup palette, it aimed to evoke her non-human aura and distinctive aristocratic mystique in this Remilia cosplay.
The wardrobe was the true crux of our preparations. The blouse was crafted from delicate white lace featuring a high-neck sheer overlay, cinched with a crimson corset bodice accented with dangling pearl chains and red and white sculpted roses. The skirt utilized an asymmetrical high-low cut, weaving together cascading layers of white lace and crimson satin that billow with dramatic texture as I move, paired gracefully with White stockings. Since the character features iconic bat wings, I had a custom set of red-and-black wings crafted. The wide-brimmed white lace mob cap was extraordinarily ornate, though it required frequent angle readjustments during shooting to prevent shadowing my vision.
To complement this styling, extensive care went into set design. We chose eerie, deep blue ambient lighting paired with white Roman pillars, suspended iron chains, scattered skulls, vintage gilded frames, and flickering candlelight. The crimson apple was the crowning touch: holding the apple while seated before the ornate gilded frame created a striking visual contrast between the cool background and the red-and-white costume. To inject dramatic tension into each shot, I explored seated, reclining, and expansive arm-reaching poses. However, shifting postures with the wings on my back and the heavy bonnet overhead demanded extreme caution—not only to maintain physical balance, but to master facial expressions as well. Because vibrant red contacts can easily make one's gaze appear blank, we had to test angles repeatedly to nail that subtly aloof, composed aristocrat glare.
Producing this photoshoot was my personal tribute to Touhou Project and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Although Remilia has been interpreted in countless ways across fan works, in crafting this vision, I truly wanted to preserve her noble grace and majestic authority as a vampire lord. By refining the placement of lights and props, the final result was deeply gratifying, and I sincerely hope everyone enjoys this Gothic Lolita interpretation of Remilia cosplay.
