For this Yu Linglong photoshoot, extensive effort went into preparing the costume and props beforehand.
The white corseted bodysuit I wore had each pearl and crystal rhinestone painstakingly hand-sewn into place. The draping chains across the bust line, in particular, required several placement adjustments to capture that delicate, shimmering opulence on camera. The exaggerated purple lace collar over the shoulders carried tremendous visual impact, yet it could easily look cumbersome in frame, so I deliberately calibrated my seated posture to press it slightly down. Both the gloves and over-the-knee stockings were crafted from sheer lace, with the stocking cuffs finished with petite ribbon bows and pearl-linked garter bands—demanding extreme delicacy when slipping them on to prevent snags.
The indoor set was staged in a vintage Gothic style space. A large European carved sofa draped in crimson velvet stood against a backdrop of intricate, dark gold damask wallpaper. To enrich the atmosphere, I gathered a curated assortment of props: atop the vintage black leather trunk in the foreground rested yellowed tomes, an illuminated lantern, and antique glass flacons. A gilded birdcage stood in the right background, while a chessboard carpet was rolled out across the floor. These converging elements wove a vivid narrative into the frame.
Sculpting the wig was equally labor-intensive: the silver-white short hair had to maintain fluffy volume while ensuring the twin horn-like topknots remained rigidly upright without sagging. For makeup, cool-toned eye shadow and bold crimson lips were prioritized, paired with pale contact lenses to mirror her cool, languid detachment. Because the outfit is predominantly white, fill lights against the moody, dark backdrop had to be positioned with utmost precision to keep the intricate fabric textures from getting swallowed by the shadows.
The snug fit of the garment, combined with balancing on books and reclining across the sofa to hold poses, was physically demanding. In the first shot where I step atop the books with a hand resting against my cheek, my ankles were held ramrod straight to maintain clean leg lines. For the second and third shots leaning into the sofa, I had to ensure the fabric did not bunch around the waist while letting the curves of the legs extend organically. The stark chiaroscuro between light and shadow was dramatic; warm amber illumination washed over the white attire to make its textural presence pop, yet that also required my movements to be crisp and still to avoid motion blur. The photographer constantly adjusted angles, as nailing focus in such a dim environment posed a real test. Frame-wise, utilizing the sofa's ornate rococo woodwork as a foreground element introduced wonderful spatial layering. Reviewing the finished proofs—with the intricate lace and the soft specular gleam of the pearls—made every tweak completely worthwhile. Successfully channeling the refined elegance of this attire amidst a vintage, mysterious setting made for an immensely rewarding photoshoot.
