This finished Hiyuki cosplay shoot from Wuthering Waves is finally ready to share, and today I want to delve into the behind-the-scenes craft and shooting nuances behind this styling. For the wig, I sculpted Hiyuki's iconic white locks with layered texturing, cutting the front into sharp hime bangs while leaving generous side locks to frame the face. The crown was styled into an updo secured with hairspray, finished with custom white horn ornaments, red-and-white braided cords, and side clips featuring white blossoms with gilded stamens—striking an effortless balance between combat readiness and ornate delicacy.
Makeup served as the cornerstone of the aesthetic. To channel her canonical demeanor, I chose crimson contact lenses and swept deep red eyeshadow broadly across the outer corners and lower lash line to deepen the gaze, accented by inner-corner highlights that gave my stare a razor-sharp pierce. A fair matte foundation paired with low-saturation reddish-brown lips harmonized perfectly with her aloof, subtly dangerous presence.
Wardrobe-wise, this modified Japanese style kimono is packed with rich details. The top features a white cross-collar off-the-shoulder silhouette layered over a black tube top, boasting voluminous sleeves adorned at the shoulders and cuffs with gold buckles, white ties, and red, white, and blue piping. A complex black-and-white underbust obi cinches the waist, hung with utility straps, metallic rings, and red-and-white tassels. The deep crimson maxi skirt has a high slit cut that elegantly flatters the leg contours during movement and posing. To enrich the styling, I added a white thigh ring and black platform sandals accented with white floral embellishments, weaving extra visual depth into the red-and-white palette.
For Sword cosplay props, the primary weapon is a katana rendered in red, black, and gold, with long flowing red streamers tied to the hilt that flutter gracefully in motion. I also prepared pink sakura boughs as scenic accents. Shooting against a clean grey-and-white studio backdrop with soft diffused lighting kept the focus entirely on garment textures and character poise. To bring kinetic energy to the frame, I explored diverse postures—lifting one leg in a combat-ready stance, or dropping onto one knee leaning over the planted blade with head bowed. The wide sleeves offered fluid drape mid-motion while the slit skirt peeked at clean leg lines, finding an organic balance between the sharp bite of cold steel and the tender romance of Sakura cosplay.
Bringing this session to life was physically demanding, especially keeping steady balance while maneuvering the hefty katana. From wig styling and wardrobe tweaks to communicating angles with the photographer, every phase required intense dedication.
