Prior to shooting this Christmas-themed styling, the main consideration was how to combine the characters' intrinsic traits with the warm-toned festive atmosphere. The costume featured a red tube-top dress trimmed with white plush collar and cuffs, cinched at the waist with a wide black belt. The lower half was paired with white tights and red high heels, focusing the visual highlights on leg contours and the tailored cut of the upper bodice.
The photoshoot setting was a room filled with Christmas elements—aside from the centerpiece Christmas tree, the surroundings were adorned with giant red bows, snowflake ornaments, nutcrackers, and gift boxes scattered across the floor. Due to strong overhead lighting on set, a reflector was used from the front to preserve facial three-dimensionality during close-ups. When capturing full-body shots, adjusting the camera position and utilizing wide-angle lens perspective better accentuated the proportions of long legs in White stockings.
Various props were utilized in the frame to enhance dynamism, such as a giant red candy cane and plush dolls of several characters. When posing with the candy cane, we considered its diagonal extension across the frame to break up rigid vertical compositions. This was a duo shoot with my partner cosplaying Rei Ayanami cosplay; her blue short hair and red-and-white Christmas dress formed a striking warm-and-cool contrast with my orange twintails and outfit. Especially during mirror selfie perspective shots, we paid close attention to the mirror's bottom wooden frame, using natural diagonal composition alongside a side reflective umbrella as fill light to render clear leg silhouettes and full-body postures in the mirror.
In post-processing, focus was placed on restoring the texture of the velvet fabric and balancing color differences between the red skirt hem and White stockings. Leg line retouching concentrated on the transitions between ankles and calves to ensure a smooth, natural look. Facial details centered on catchlights in the eyes, enhancing pupil reflections to elevate the liveliness of expressions. The overall light-and-shadow atmosphere emphasized holiday warmth; stacking warm yellow key lights with soft-focus filters yielded a soft, blurred effect along the plush fur trims. Overall, this shoot was a meticulous effort across wardrobe prep, prop coordination, and lighting adjustments. Integrating the garment structure with character traits successfully achieved our intended visual goals, serving as a detailed record of a derivative styling for these classic Neon Genesis Evangelion characters.
