This set of Asuka Cosplay Convention photos was taken during the Chongqing Dreamland anime convention. The outfit coordination was quite complex: a red-and-black leather cropped jacket, a plaid miniskirt, along with over-the-knee Black stockings and a thigh strap, boots, and the emblem badge on the hat. Because the leather is relatively stiff and structured, the overall silhouette looked very sharp, though pulling the zipper up and down during dressing took quite some effort. The wig was styled very smoothly and set with hairspray before heading out—especially the front bangs, making it easy to capture great shots on camera. The gloves were made of transparent vinyl plastic, which reflected light strongly but also scratched easily, requiring careful maintenance. The lighting at the venue was rather messy with numerous ceiling reflections, but luckily the photographer used a wide-aperture lens to cleanly blur out the background booths and crowds.
In post-processing, I mainly adjusted the glossiness of the leather jacket to make highlights pop, while refining leg contours to give the Black stockings a more delicate texture—taking care not to over-retouch and preserving the authentic texture of the live event. The camera was placed very low during shooting, primarily leveraging the wide-angle perspective distortion to elongate leg proportions and give the overall look a more commanding presence. Walking around the Chongqing Dreamland hall that day, I met many fellow fans of this classic Neon Genesis Evangelion character, and everyone was very supportive of the costume's fidelity. Due to the heavy foot traffic at the exhibition, shooting was done by catching open gaps in the crowd, constantly staying mindful of passersby to avoid blocking traffic.
Makeup was touched up twice—maintaining an even and long-lasting finish under thick makeup is always a challenge—and thanks to the styling spray, the hair held up well throughout the day. Compared to fixed studio lighting, snapshots in a live convention environment carry a natural, vivid vitality. The immersive atmosphere of an anime convention is something studio shoots can't match, as you get to meet many people with shared passions. To find suitable shooting spots in the crowd, we discussed framing and angles thoroughly. Sizing this jacket took several try-ons before finalizing, considering comfort and mobility when turning. Although the clear gloves looked stylish, the fingers were somewhat stiff, which slightly affected posing and required conscious hand adjustments. Ultimately, the visual effect of the leg lines paired with the Black stockings turned out great with well-balanced proportions, making these Convention photos remarkably clean within such a busy event setting. With bright red hair shining under the hall lights, subtle color grading brought out a fantastic ambiance. The wide aperture clearly helped the subject stand out against the busy venue. The shoot lasted about an hour; collaborating smoothly with the photographer to deliver my best state made all the fatigue fade away upon seeing the raw files. It was a smooth shoot and a wonderful memory.
