[Sparkle Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, Catching a Flash of Red Shadow on the Dark Stage of Changchun

The convention photos from the Changchun Northeast Asia Anime Convention are finally out. This time, collaborating with photographer and retoucher Nai Xi, I chose to cosplay Sparkle from Honkai: Star Rail. Before the shoot, we agreed to find a relatively independent space at the bustling convention venue to create a stage presence, and fortunately, we found such a scene in a corner of the exhibition hall.

The red-and-black gradient wig presents a very subtle texture under the flashlights at the convention venue. Wig stylist Ling Xi spent a lot of thought handling the red pointed horn hair accessories on top of the head and the fox mask pendants. The modified Japanese-style outfit with a red and black color scheme, paired with those wooden-soled thick-heeled red strappy sandals, makes the overall look stand out exceptionally bright against the dark-toned background. Especially that belt with golden rope knots and a blue crystal ball serves as a great visual focus to balance the off-the-shoulder design of the upper body.

When planning this set of photos, we decided to utilize a pure black environmental background to avoid clutter and highlight the main character using specific spotlight equipment. Photographer and retoucher Nai Xi completely understood my pursuit of stage presence and theatricality; he adjusted the flash positions multiple times during the shoot to let the light and shadow fall precisely on the face and legs. Particularly, those shots combining warm yellow paper lantern props created an excellent cool-and-warm contrast between the character's red-and-black color palette and the light source in the cold, dark environment.

During the shoot, to display the character's playfulness and confidence, I intentionally struck several poses focused mainly on sitting positions. Sitting on the grey floor mat, lifting legs, sitting sideways, or holding up the fox mask—each frame was an attempt to restore the character's original traits of being both showy and slightly mysterious. In this image selected as the cover, I casually made a V-sign gesture, cooperating with a slightly upturned corner of the lips, attempting to find the character's attitude of seemingly being casual yet controlling the entire venue.

The shoes are a small highlight of this look. Although wearing them to stand continuously for several hours heavily tests foot endurance, the shoe type indeed makes the leg lines look longer and sharper. The wooden thick heels and red straps present a great textural balance in the photos, looking unforced when paired with the floor mat and dark background, showcasing a beautiful long legs cosplay.

The flow of people at the convention venue was huge. Although the venue was relatively dark, under the capture of the spotlight, the overall sense of atmosphere was fully maximized. The cooperation with the photographer was seamless; between lifting up and putting down Sparkle's iconic fox mask, the character's cunning and voluptuous charm were captured quite well. Looking back at these convention photos, I feel the interaction in live photos is actually more natural than in studio shoots, because the convention environment prompts you to get into character faster to handle the bustling yet passionate audience around you.

The material choice of this costume is very subtle. The large area of red glossy fabric generates beautiful reflections under strong light, while the black-purple patchwork fabric is very steady, perfectly matching the character's personality setting of being both extroverted and introverted. During post-processing, we intentionally preserved some true textures of the skin without excessive smoothing; otherwise, the complex clothing incorporating Japanese elements would lose its realism and conversely look too plasticky.

To shoot high-texture convention photos at an anime expo, managing the light is of paramount importance. Nai Xi specifically used flags to control the direction of the light source this time, making my skin tone and the red-and-black layers of the clothes separate very clearly, especially handling the reflection details of the neck choker and bells beautifully. Convention shooting offers a high degree of freedom without the strict camera position restrictions found in a studio; improvising with the live environment conversely brought many unexpected pleasant surprises.

It must be said that Sparkle's setting is truly suitable for this kind of dark stage atmosphere that carries a sense of danger and aloofness. Whether it's the edge painting of the mask or the hanging method of the waist bells, every small piece needs to be worn just right. I have always felt that high-quality cosplay is not just about imitating the character's planar look, but standing from that person's perspective to feel her emotions. This set of photos beautifully records the few days I met Sparkle, and it stands as a wonderful memory left for me by the Changchun Northeast Asia Anime Convention. This is a memorable piece of Anime-style photography.
