Shooting this set of Asuka look from Neon Genesis Evangelion took much more time than expected. First was this iconic red bodysuit; to achieve that high-gloss patent leather battle suit texture, the material itself was quite stiff with zero elasticity. Wearing it meant not only overcoming restricted movement in limbs, but also constantly keeping the surface smooth to prevent embarrassing wrinkles while walking around the anime convention. Fortunately, the ultimate gloss and shaping effect in the photos were truly satisfying: the red reflections stood out conspicuously under the convention hall lights, making the \"02\" number on the chest and the green-blue color-blocked collar structure remarkably clear.
To match Asuka's defiant and proud temperament, a vibrant orange-red wig was selected, with side hair specifically tied up into twin tails. This hairstyle really tests head shape; to avoid making hair ornaments look awkward, I adjusted the height and angle multiple times during styling to barely reach a natural fit. For makeup, to match the character's tight intensity, eye contours were specifically emphasized, and bright blue contact lenses were chosen to faithfully capture character accuracy.
Lighting inside this convention hall was actually quite messy, filled with many other visitors and booths. The difficulty in preparing this outfit lay not just in the suit itself, but also in the long polearm prop in hand. This red long spear was quite bulky, and carrying it through crowds was actually pretty hazardous, easily bumping into people nearby, so I spent most of the time standing obediently in relatively open areas. However, once the camera was set up and shooting began, I had to immediately get into character. For full-body convention photos, to show off the weapon's tension, it had to be rested on the shoulder or pointed straight diagonally downward as in Figure 1—this pose actually placed high demands on core strength because movements needed to look smooth and natural despite the patent leather friction making bodily movements quite stiff.
Another tricky aspect of patent leather material is how easily it attracts dust and fingerprints, especially in high-traffic convention venues. So during breaks between shooting, I spent almost all my time wiping the arm and leg surfaces with a damp cloth, hoping to maintain peak reflective effects. The photographer was also super patient, helping me find angles and guiding me into poses that showcased costume details without making joint movements look awkward. We also intentionally avoided booths with cluttered backgrounds, picking relatively clean areas to finally capture these two comfortably composed convention photos.
Speaking of the wearing experience of this outfit, it was truly a mixed bag. Although this material creates a visually stunning effect—especially under direct light where it exudes a futuristic tech vibe—its breathability is virtually zero. Even though this suit looks like a one-piece jumpsuit, putting it on and taking it off was quite a hassle, and due to the tight material, range of motion was much smaller than imagined. But for the sake of presenting better character accuracy, this physical discomfort was worth overcoming.
During today's shoot, I also noticed everyone's curiosity and attention toward this high-gloss material. Actually, this radiance stems partly from the costume's inherent charm, but relies heavily on the use of light during shooting. Under different angles, this shade of red presents varied textures—sometimes looking bright red, and other times shifting to dark red or orange-red due to light refraction. This is one thing I really love about this look, because capturing subtle color shifts in static images truly tests the photographer's mastery over light and shadow.
As for makeup and styling this time, another satisfying detail was the wig management. Throughout the entire day, the hair strands maintained neat curves and fluffiness without getting tangled, allowing me to face the camera with greater confidence during shooting. The long handle of the prop was quite heavy, so holding it with one hand required special attention to balance; otherwise, one's posture would look less upright. If you also want to try Asuka Cosplay or similar shoots featuring large physical props, I recommend practicing holding weapons beforehand; otherwise, adapting on the fly on-site can easily make character postures look unnatural. Long polearm props like this spear elongate body lines visually, yet increase unexpected shooting risks—luckily everything went smoothly today.
Shooting with two camera setups emphasized different priorities. Full-body shots focused on pose fluidity and weapon coordination; when zooming in for mid-range close-ups, closer attention was needed for facial expressions and eye contact. Although it was just a simple standing stance or a cold expression, coordinating the costume, wig, props, and breathing rhythm required effort behind the scenes. Getting such clear raw images from this convention shoot makes me truly grateful for the photographer's captures. On-site crowds were indeed massive, so managing to avoid people and create a relatively clean background was no easy feat. I hope to try more character challenges requiring difficult materials in the future; although every wearing process feels like a physical workout, the final photo output always makes up for all the hard work. In summary, this Asuka look felt like a deeply satisfying record in presenting both costume texture and character demeanor.
