[Asuka Cosplay] Refreshing summer DIY Cosplay by the beachside pool

Today's Beach photography series was shot right around midday when the sunlight was at its absolute brightest. For this project, I finally brought to life the seaside DIY Cosplay concept for Asuka that I had wanted to try for so long. Aiming to harmonize with the summer atmosphere, I selected a high-contrast palette of bright yellow and vivid orange, with the red heart-shaped sunglasses perched on my head serving as the sole visual accent prop.

Prepping the wig took nearly two hours. The original wig was quite dense, so to achieve airy, natural high twin tails, I backcombed the roots with a comb while keeping the blunt-cut bangs neatly aligned. The reddish-orange color pops vibrantly under direct sunlight but also reflects harsh glares easily, so I intentionally faced the light during the shoot. The blue contact lenses were chosen specifically to mirror her canonical eye color, which, paired with slightly winged eyeliner, creates a piercing, direct gaze into the lens.

I opted for a matte makeup finish, primarily because poolside and outdoor lighting can easily make the complexion appear greasy. Under the eyes, I applied blush quite heavily with concentrated color blocks; while this technique might look exaggerated in person, it beautifully accentuates the character's confident, slightly haughty demeanor in tight close-up camera frames.

As for the outfit, this was my own DIY Cosplay styling attempt. To suit the poolside setting, I stepped away from conventional school uniforms or plugsuits, choosing instead a ribbed mustard-yellow summer bikini paired with distressed denim shorts. This coordinate reveals the waistline to emphasize athletic, healthy proportions. I manually adjusted both the bikini ties and the shorts' lacing to ensure nothing slipped while moving near the water. Although the styling deviates from canonical designs, adapting attire to fit specific locations is one of my favorite expressive outlets when exploring 2D photoshoots.

The shooting venue was an infinity pool right beside the ocean. In the first shot, I glanced back at the lens with an arm resting atop the sunglasses—a pose that looks organic, as if caught spontaneously by the photographer calling my name. The second profile shot was framed to display body lines, where standing sideways leveraged directional light to carve out the contours of my neck, shoulders, and waist. Though the three o'clock sun was intense, it cast warm specular highlights onto the skin, creating a striking contrast against the turquoise pool water.

Working near water meant reflectors offered limited help, so I relied almost entirely on natural ambient light. Dipping into the pool between takes required extreme caution to prevent splashes from wetting the wig—a small challenge on set. During post-processing, I preserved natural skin texture without excessive smoothing, focusing mainly on calibrating the blue-green saturation of the seawater for a clear, luminous look. The sea breeze blew constantly, tussling the wig and requiring adjustments after almost every shutter release. Yet seeing that bright, effortless ease in the finalized photos made every bit of preparation worthwhile. This Poolside photoshoot was a delightful creative journey and a special keepsake for my summer, and I hope everyone seeing these photos can feel that crisp holiday breeze.
