[Goddess of Victory: Nikke cosplay] Red and White Impressions on the Coastal Reef

I took a trip to the coast in Qingdao and captured this set of red-and-white photos. Right after wrapping up, I felt the outcome was just average and didn't manage to edit many shots in post. But while sorting through the RAW files today, I thought I'd document this Qingdao travel photography journey.

For this location shoot, we chose a quintessential rocky shoreline in Qingdao, where the seawater was a grayish blue and waves crashed against colossal reefs, sending white sea spray flying high. The wind was truly fierce, blowing my hair a bit wild, but it also gave the white semi-sheer lace cover-up a wonderful dynamic flutter. The overall lighting was diffused overcast daylight—a tricky lighting setup where the upside is soft facial shadows, but the downside is that the vibrant red of the costume tends to look muted, requiring significant effort in post to brighten and correct skin tones.

The styling centers on a red-and-white color-blocked contrast: a red bikini-style top on the upper body, adorned with clustered red-and-white floral hair accessories on the head and a red choker around the neck. To add layered styling, I wore a white sheer lace shawl over it, featuring lightweight white tulle at the hem that billowed freely in the breeze. For props, I chose a traditional red paper umbrella and a red folding fan; these props carry a distinctive charm by the seaside. Especially in Photo 1 where the red umbrella half-veils my profile, the red canopy and red tasseled cord stand out with fantastic visual contrast against the gray-blue seascape.

The shooting process was genuinely tough. Because the setting consisted of rough granite reefs, stepping barefoot required extreme caution as sharp edges and uneven surfaces made it difficult to balance. When ocean waves surged, white seafoam easily soaked the hem and white tulle, requiring us to dodge the waves while snapping photos. For the shots with the umbrella, the gale was so strong it constantly threatened to flip the umbrella inside out, so we had to trigger the shutter while I used all my arm strength to steady the ribs. The shots with the fan were comparatively more composed, under evener lighting that clearly showcased the garment's tailoring.

In post-processing, because the raw files shot on an overcast day had very flat colors, I needed to resolve issues with muted reds and underexposed skin tones. However, I personally felt this cool-gray seaside ambiance naturally complemented the red and white palette on the Cosplayer, without needing to over-brighten the background completely. I only fine-tuned a select few images this time; with such heavy sea winds, many candid expressions and poses had to be clicked hurriedly before reaching optimal perfection.

I must say, although outdoor Beach photography is heavily constrained by weather and natural conditions, the sensation of wind grazing skin and the sound of waves pounding reefs offer an authentic realism that cannot be simulated in a studio. This red-and-white outfit was remarkably photogenic against the gray-blue seascape; although only a few cuts were polished, the clash between the rugged natural landscape and 2D character-inspired attire left a very tangible memory of this Qingdao trip. If I do another beach shoot next time, I hope for clear, sunny weather to capture even more translucent colors for this Goddess of Victory: Nikke cosplay.
