This Frieren: Beyond Journey's End shoot with Bugua was set on an open grassy slope next to a reservoir. The weather was incredibly supportive; the blue sky and white clouds paired with tall wild grass perfectly captured the wilderness scenery of an adventurous journey in our minds. As the cosplayer for Fern, I was actually a bit anxious when I first got the outfit because Fern's clothing has quite a few layers—a black long coat worn over a white robe, making it a relatively clean yet slightly heavy mage attire overall. But after putting it on, I found the fabric texture very comfortable. When walking, the hem of the coat flutters slightly, and paired with that purple-and-white magic wand prop, it truly brings out the character's steady yet slightly stubborn feel.

During the shoot, we kept breaking into laughter because Bugua's Frieren always naturally showed that gaze of 'having lived for thousands of years but still remaining entirely unfazed' in front of the camera. Especially in the close-up shot of her holding the ruby wand, she tilted her head slightly, her white hair blowing in the wind, and with the details of the elf ear style and the flower crown, she instantly captured the character's detached yet gentle aura. As for myself, I tried my best to adjust my posture to match Fern's demeanor of 'obviously caring a lot but trying to pretend not to.' In the shot where we stood side-by-side on a high platform, both of us tried to empty our expressions as much as possible; the background blue sky and the distant bridge formed a wonderful depth of field, and when the wind swept through, it felt truly cinematic.

In terms of props, Frieren's wand is quite heavy, featuring a red shaft with golden rings and a ruby. Bugua held it all day, and her arms got sore, but she still insisted on re-shooting every angle multiple times. My wand had a brown shaft with purple wrapping decorations, giving it a raw wood texture in hand, which, paired with black short boots and the white robe, kept the overall color contrast very clean. For post-processing, Ouhuang and I adjusted the tones together, slightly cranking up the saturation of the blue sky to make the yellow-green of the grass more vibrant. We preserved that natural light feel of sunlight splashing over the body from the original frames without excessive skin smoothing, because for cosplay photos, we preferred to retain real skin textures and the chaotic look of hair blown messy by the wind.

We actually prepared quite a few small details for this outdoor location shoot; for instance, the flower crown on top of Frieren's head was handcrafted by us. Although it might only show a corner in the frame, adding it made the entire look more complete. Fern's inner white robe actually has vertical stripe hidden patterns that reveal fine crease textures under the sunlight, and these details can all be seen in the close-ups. Before shooting, we spent a long time tidying the wigs on set because the wind was too strong, causing the wigs to fly around constantly—especially Fern's long purple hair, where the bangs frequently blocked her eyes. Later, the photographer suggested simply keeping that natural wind-swept state, which conversely fit the feel of trekking through the wilderness much better.

My absolute favorite out of the entire photoset is Frieren's single close-up in the grass, where her gaze falls right in front of the lens, carrying a sense of quietly telling a story. The duo shots are also highly atmospheric, especially the back view of us stepping on rocks and looking into the distance; although it was a staged pose, at that exact split second, it truly felt as if we were two people walking on a journey. When packing up the props after finishing the shoot, the sunset was already dipping below the mountains, casting long shadows across the grass. That kind of post-work exhaustion and satisfaction is probably something only people who do cosplay will understand. This is the complete record of our Frieren: Beyond Journey's End shoot this time, and I hope the presented images allow everyone to feel that core tranquility and strength of the characters themselves.
