On the day of the shoot, we ventured into the mountain stream valley of Youkai Mountain. The autumn mountainsides ablaze with red maples and rushing stream waters, paired with the White Wolf Tengu lore, made for a remarkably immersive real-world location (Autumn scenery). This photo set primarily highlights Inubashiri Momiji's calm and steadfast side during territory patrols; hence, we spent considerable time finding the right resting position on a boulder mid-stream to avoid heavy water spray while making full use of the light filtering through the maple leaves in the background.
In preparing the costume and props, the red maple leaf emblem on the shield needed to echo the surrounding background elements, and the katana was weighted for a firmer, more stable grip in breezy outdoor conditions. The white Animal ears and tail showed gorgeous furry texture under natural light, though they required careful brushing to prevent mist accumulation. This series was shot in backlight: the photographer used the glistening reflections on the water's surface as the foreground, enhancing the image's translucence, while soft autumn sunlight neatly outlined the character's silhouette.
Shooting in an outdoor stream valley requires practical care, such as slip prevention, waterproofing props, and adjusting posture to balance the character's dignified authority with maiden elegance. Falling maple leaves and flowing streams added vibrant dynamic beauty to the frame; personally, I felt the water's edge was the perfect setting to convey her watchful vigilance. Because of the strong backlight and bright water surface, repeated spot metering was necessary to balance background highlights and facial illumination details. We experimented with several sword-holding and shield-propping poses during the shoot, ultimately selecting this leaning-seated angle, endowing the overall visual with both strength and gentle grace. As an iconic setting within Touhou Project, utilizing authentic autumn foliage instead of a studio backdrop elevated the fidelity of the character significantly. I hope this photo set authentically conveys the crisp autumn atmosphere of Youkai Mountain and the noble guardian spirit of Inubashiri Momiji (accentuated with White stockings).
