The convention photos for Herta from the Ring Universe Anime & Game Carnival brought quite a few surprises; let's dive straight into the finished shots.
Many details were prepared for this shoot, with the staff serving as the absolute centerpiece for recreating Herta's image. This wand wasn't an off-the-shelf prop; I modified it myself on top of the original base. To enhance the tactile weight when held, I intentionally used multiple layered materials to give the wand a heft and texture closer to an actual magical heavy weapon. Navigating the crowded convention floor meant constant bustling, so I reinforced the interior with high-density foam to prevent damage from bumps. Holding the wand aloft or horizontally with one hand during dynamic poses really required core strength to maintain balance; my wrist felt quite sore after several poses, but the sheer presence of the wand truly elevated the character's aura instantly.
The tailoring of the costume demanded equal rigor. The top utilized a glossy black fabric with mirror-like reflective qualities, paired with layered metallic silver patterns across the chest. Under studio lighting or camera flashes, it reflected bright, eye-catching highlights that sculpted the body contour with enhanced dimensionality. The side lacing served not merely as decoration, but as the key to adjusting waist fit—striking a balance between aesthetic appeal and mobility without pulling too tight. White ruffled sleeves on both sides and the purple wizard hat formed a striking color contrast, making this black-white-purple scheme an iconic visual signature of the character. To ensure the massive purple hat brim endured convention crowds and gusts of wind, I specially sewed an anti-slip liner inside, preventing it from slipping while preserving its crisp, upright structure. The white magical totems along the outer brim were hand-cut and stitched on piece by piece, doing utmost justice to every detail from the original concept art.
In terms of makeup and expression modeling, Herta in the original lore is an absolute master controlling the grand situation with unwavering confidence. Thus, in this makeup design, I deliberately softened sweet vibes, placing heavier emphasis on cold detachment and decisive resolve in the gaze. Soft-textured light-colored wigs were paired with light purple contact lenses matching the character. Lowering the brow arch angle lent an unhurried, commanding presence between the eyes. Throughout the shoot, I strove to comprehend the character's detached rationality that overlooks all worldly matters, keeping expressions restrained and calm for the most part, devoid of excess smiles. Cosplay isn't merely putting on garments; it's stepping into a character's inner world to interpret their aura.
Regarding the shooting environment, the Ring Universe Carnival venue was quite spacious, though direct overhead lighting presented notable challenges. Poor positioning could easily cause messy reflections, stripping facial light and shadow of three-dimensional depth. The accompanying photographer was incredibly professional, timely adjusting my positioning to locate optimal lighting angles while adeptly integrating convention props to enrich compositions. Half-body close-ups raising the staff and seated postures using booth height captured the flowing costume fabric and structural lines of the props with sharp precision.
During the convention, I met many fellow fans who love the game, and everyone gave immense praise for the costume's fidelity. For me, the most satisfying moment in Cosplay photography comes when standing before the lens equipped in these meticulously prepared items—the weight of the wand, the texture of the fabric, all assisting in executing a performance that transcends reality. This resonant connection with the character is precisely what convention photos seek to document: not just pretty pictures, but a homage to the character's spiritual core.
