[Patchouli Cosplay] The Sleeping Great Library in Touhou Project

The sleeping Great Library—the bookshelves and stacked ancient tomes here are denser than anywhere else in Gensokyo. The starting point for this shoot was to freeze that secluded, cozy aura of being surrounded by books. The dim blue-purple glow in the photos was actually an effect specially created through studio lighting, simulating an environment deep within the library where no direct sunlight reaches, lit only by the faint shimmer of magical pages.

To capture Patchouli's essence as someone who stays shut inside the library year-round, beyond the essential round-framed glasses and the old red leather book, I paid close attention to the softness of the costume fabric. This time, I chose a Lolita dress cosplay style primarily in light colors, with abundant layers of semi-sheer tulle and lace trimmings at the hem and cuffs. Although slightly moving around during the shoot meant brushing against books and surrounding leather trunks, the light, airy feeling when walking truly brought to life her character setting of "occasionally coming out to stretch her limbs."

The books and vintage suitcases stacked around the scene were carefully chosen props. To emphasize the quietness of "sleeping," most books were antique or vintage-textured hardcovers, stacked high enough on the floor to cover the lower half of the chair, creating a sense of security wrapped in knowledge. The vintage leather sofa was also spot-on—sinking into it slightly, holding a book in hand with an arm resting on the armrest naturally brought out Patchouli's lazy yet scholarly posture.

The shooting process was actually quite challenging, especially since the skirt was so long and I wore light-colored leather shoes, making it easy to step on the tulle trim if not careful. Furthermore, round-framed glasses tend to catch glare under studio lights. To find the most natural expression and angle, we spent a lot of time adjusting the angle of my face facing the light—pretending to read while keeping my gaze focused yet gentle, matching her personality of loving books while occasionally spacing out.

The purple wig was very smooth, and paired with the clearly pleated mob cap, the overall retro look came together immediately. To maintain this vintage feel, I avoided heavy eyeshadow and eyeliner, opting for sheer, light makeup with lip color and blush to add vitality. This kept the character from appearing overly modern, allowing the photo's color tones and lighting to tell the story of this quiet space.

Seeing the final results, I feel that the serene, almost dreamy magician aura of the studio was captured well. Given the chance, I'd love to haul a cart full of vintage book props again to shoot scenes of weaving between bookshelves or reading magic grimoires on a high stool at midnight, which would surely offer even richer visual imagination around the Touhou Project theme. The photography team was also very attentive, capturing many details within the narrow setting so that the photos show both physical beauty and the character's uniquely quiet charm.
