Welcoming the God of Wealth on the Fifth day of the Lunar New Year, this Touhou Project Goutokuji Mike cosplay photo set aligns perfectly with today's festive spirit. The shoot location was set on a redwood boardwalk in an urban park. The early winter dawn redwood trees had wonderful colors—the intertwined red and gold foliage paired with water reflections was visually lush, harmonizing effortlessly with my red-and-white costume. Before shooting, the photographer and I studied the environment carefully: the pavilion structures provided great framing compositions, and the boardwalk lines were very pronounced. Utilizing shallow depth of field to blur the background allowed the main subject to stand out cleanly and crisply.
Let's talk about the outfit. Styling the white animal ears and tail was quite painstaking—especially the tail, which needed to maintain volume and a natural curve, directly influencing the character's lively feel. The overall costume design incorporates the maneki-neko (beckoning cat) concept, with a white dress in front accented by orange-red ribbon bows and cuff trimmings, looking both cheerful and endearing. The 100,000-ryo wooden plaque held in hand was not only a prop, but also the soul of this photo set; paired with red wristbands, it truly manifested the aura of Bringing in wealth and treasure.
During actual shooting, the biggest challenge was balancing dynamic motion with stillness. For instance, standing on one leg on the wooden boardwalk while maintaining balance and ensuring an attractive flare to the skirt required engaging core muscles to steady my center of gravity. Another challenge was facial expression control: because the wooden plaque was an irregularly shaped, heavy object, holding it up tended to tense my shoulders and stiffen my expressions, so before each snapshot, I took deep breaths to relax and ensure a playful, natural look.
Regarding leg contours and posture, I paid particular attention to lines. On a wooden deck platform like this, standing on tiptoes or tucking the calf back visually elongates proportions, delivering a buoyant lightness. Paired with the lace-up strap details on the shoes, jumping poses captured gorgeous dynamic leg lines. To seize those airborne moments, the photographer and I coordinated repeatedly—running through trial movements before snapping the shutter—so the skirt and tail could flutter naturally in the breeze. The waterside reflection served as a natural backdrop; I paid close attention to positioning so my legs and the reflection created a blended, ethereal visual effect.
In post-processing color grading, we preserved a warm tone so the entire image was bathed in the cozy warmth of late autumn and early winter, matching the cheerful, celebratory mood of welcoming the God of Wealth on the fifth day. Although shooting by the water was chilly, immersing myself in the character's agile, charming, and prosperous lore brought immense joy. After finishing this set, I felt as if an entire year of good fortune and wealth was illuminated by these festive red accents and lively movements. From dynamic tension to costume fit, this photo set reached an ideal state, and I thoroughly enjoyed recreating the character through body language in such a tailored setting.
