Embodying Alice Margatroid from Touhou Project today. The core concept of this shoot was "the doll," and to honor this theme, I made extensive calibrations to my cosmetics. The base foundation was prepped noticeably fair, focusing on pink blush and blue contact lenses to create an aloof, subtly yandere yet delicately fragile detachment. The blonde wig required a lengthy razor cut; the curved lines of the bangs and side-locks had to hug facial contours precisely to support the lace bonnet. Deep eyeshadow gradients were smudged along the outer corners of the eyes alongside pronounced lower lashes to make the eyes appear wider and rounder, which, paired with disciplined eye focus, beautifully projected that inorganic doll-like presence.
Looking at wardrobe construction, this classical Lolita fashion gown features countless tiers. The white lace under-blouse, intricate collar ruffles, translucent wine-red bows, and white rose accents took substantial time to don and organize. The bonnet is the crown jewel of the styling: pink lace edgings paired with dark red scalloped trims, adorned on the left with a dimensional rose and striped satin ribbons to enrich depth. To ensure the gown maintained a billowing, bell-shaped silhouette before the camera lens, an expansive petticoat was layered beneath.
For hand props, the black gift box tied with red ribbons in Photo 1 was custom-curated. Its gilded openwork filigree and blue gemstone accents harmonized with the overarching color scheme, sized just right to avoid distracting from facial focus. For Photo 1, we selected a solid blue-purple studio backdrop, utilizing studio strobes to contrast the cool-toned backdrop against golden hair and blue eyes, maximizing the subject's visual prominence.
Photos 2 and 3 were shot across a bed setting, adopting a more intimate, lounge-like posture to capture hand gestures and eye focus suggesting a newly awakened, static, and ethereal state. Embodying such a character requires avoiding rigid limbs; fingers should relax gently and wrists curve with soft fluidity. At times, chasing that perfect catchlight made facial muscles twitch, yet seeing that emotionless yet hypnotic allure materialize in the final frames made every effort worthwhile.
Photo 4 serves as an authentic behind-the-scenes glimpse during makeup breaks. Wearing layered Victorian gowns and petticoats meant lifting the skirt hem slightly when seated to prevent deep creases that are difficult to retouch later. Scattered smartphones and cosmetics across the desk captured the frantic bustle backstage. To prevent the wig fibers from looking oily or specular under bright studio lights, generous coats of matte setting spray were applied.
Preparing for heavily crafted, elaborate costumes involves massive pre-production, demanding meticulous grooming from wig styling down to every lace trim. Rather than striking mechanical poses, I prefer immersing into the character's detached, refined demeanor before the camera. That concludes today's shoot; time to pack up the gear and head back to de-cos.
