[Patchouli cosplay] The Daily Life of a Magician in Touhou Project

Opening this thick book engraved with silver stars and shattered diamonds, I sit in the garden under dappled tree shadows. The cool leather touch of the spellbook and the texture of the distressed paper present a very realistic magical picture-book feel in front of the lens, with the silver cross star in the center reflecting fine halos under the light. For a magician seeking quiet knowledge, finding a spot with just the right sunlight on a weekend to spread obscure spell notes across one's lap is truly a relaxing affair. This garden exterior photoshoot related to Touhou Project, planned together with photographer @茶茶TEA7125, involved a lot of thought in location selection and styling coordination.

For the violet wig, I chose a fluffier curl with layering and gradient thinning, paired with a white lace headpiece featuring crescent moon and bow elements. The choker and hat brim were accented with mint green ribbons, which was particularly important in our styling considerations. Many feel Patchouli's outfit leans heavily towards dark purple and dim tones; searching for large areas of deep purple fabric based on original character designs could easily feel too heavy in a garden exterior setting. So we deliberately added mint green bows on the collar, cuffs, and hem ruffles as bright accents to complement the purple style outfit. This way, under the sunlight, it creates a fresh color contrast between light purple and pastel blue, keeping the stacked layers of the skirt from looking overly bulky, and instead giving a light, airy feel.

Regarding props, besides the iconic spellbook, I prepared a bundle of adorable soft props, including several white rabbit plushies quietly squatting nearby in the frame, as well as woven wicker baskets scattered in the corner. During shooting, I also frequently adjusted the position of the waist tulle to elongate body proportions, making the positioning of arms and the book more harmonious in the composition.

Speaking of the scenery, I was extremely pleased with the white door frame featuring lace window curtains. Especially in front of the large wall of blue and purple hydrangeas in the final set, high-saturation artificial flowers surrounded the white wooden structure, instantly bringing out a dreamlike fairytale garden ambiance. Sunlight filtering through leaves spilled onto the artificial grass floor; that interplay of light and shadow gave the entire photo a comfortable quality akin to afternoon tea. To keep large areas of purple and blue from looking plain, we arranged blue butterfly decorations on the wooden wall in a staggered, orderly pattern, adding visual depth while complementing the protagonist's playfully subtle demeanor.

To better fit the garden theme, I also wore thick-soled purple shoes decorated with bows. When capturing full-body sitting poses from a low angle, these platform shoes balance the visual center of gravity nicely while revealing the combination of sock garters and lace trim, adding a touch of playful charm suited for a magician. Frankly, wearing traditional leather shoes or long boots during outdoor shoots easily gets stuck in muddy ground or weeds, breaking the shoot's rhythm. Balancing faithful appearance recreation, the comfort of these shoes allowed me to switch sitting poses freely on the lawn while avoiding grass scratches.

As for the color tuning of this shoot, I really love the high-saturation blue-purple tones. What might originally have been a dull deep purple unexpectedly gained a fresh, breathable feel due to the contrast with surrounding blue-green hydrangeas and wooden walls. The clean lines of the white door frame formed a wonderful material contrast with the fluffy skirt.

In short, a great cosplay work is the result of styling, props, set design, and lighting working together. Good lighting plus precise set design often brightens up one's mood. Although the weekend shoot was somewhat exhausting, seeing such fairytale-quality pictures in the camera made everything feel completely worth it. Unconsciously, I wanted to play with my fingers more, pretending to chant spells and interacting with the lens—this mindset is perhaps the key to capturing a magic-user character well. The small rabbit plushies took up quite a portion of the frame, but rather than stealing focus, their presence completed the situational narrative of the whole photo set through their gaze.
