[Usami Renko cosplay] Touhou Project: Daily Snapshot of the Secret Sealing Club

Today I cosplayed Usami Renko from Touhou Project. This outfit centers around a classic black-and-white pairing, with the cropped black lace shawl serving as the key focal point. Its edges are fully trimmed with white lace, matched with cutout lace cuffs that create a strong visual contrast against the white shirt beneath. The necktie was chosen in a vivid red to establish an eye-catching focal point within the monochrome palette. For the hair, I styled brown medium-length straight locks with lightly thinned bangs, braiding a side plait adorned with a white lace ribbon bow. A wide-brimmed black hat bordered with generous lace completed the look, bringing a high level of finish to the entire ensemble.

For makeup, the eyes were styled for a natural, enlarging effect paired with brown contact lenses to bring focus to the gaze. Shooting by an indoor window under gentle, diffused light allowed for a sheer, lightweight foundation without heavy contouring. We made full use of the window glass reflections; the street outside, passing scooters, and pink cherry blossom branches opposite intermingled with the indoor scene, echoing that delicate liminality of the Secret Sealing Club drifting between reality and fantasy. The reflections of the interior lights on the glass added further visual depth.

Speaking of Renko, as a core member of the Secret Sealing Club, she embodies a rational, academically brilliant personality coupled with endless curiosity toward the unknown. When posing, I avoided overly theatrical expressions, maintaining a calm, slightly scrutinizing demeanor with eyes directed straight into the lens. Physical movements were kept minimal and poised—hands folded naturally or head tilted subtly.

Throughout fitting and shooting, the most tedious part was managing the lace on the shawl. Because the lace is extensive, an improper seated posture or overly broad movements can easily crush it, requiring constant realignment. The braid also needed just the right tension: too tight looks rigid, while too loose unravels easily. We scouted a street-facing cafe bathed in natural light, meaning post-processing only required subtle tweaks to exposure and tone to preserve authentic textures.

This outfit is ideal for spring and autumn shoots—neither too warm nor too cold. For anyone planning to cosplay Usami Renko, paying extra attention to wig care and lace maintenance is well worth it. Furthermore, with monochrome outfits in dim lighting, fill lights are critical to prevent black fabrics from losing detail and the red tie from shifting color. When I first received the costume, I didn't expect much from the fabric, but in person, the shirt draped cleanly without wrinkling at the collar. The red tie is a deep, warm crimson rather than an overpowering neon red, offering a refined texture against the black-and-white clothes. The matte dark brown wig blended seamlessly under natural light, and its textured ends added volume. For makeup, slightly thicker straight brows matched her character disposition. Window reflections demand tighter light control to prevent highlights from washing out facial contours; I adjusted my seating angle so ambient outdoor light struck my face at a 45-degree angle, maintaining bone structure while catching crisp catchlights. I kept reminding myself to sit upright, as the wide cut of the shawl would look sloppy with poor posture; opened shoulders were necessary to support the silhouette. The resulting soft, hazy feel through the glass enhanced the narrative mood, like peering through a showcase at an enigmatic phenomenon—truly fitting for the theme.
