[Patchouli cosplay] Touhou Project: The Light of the Magic Book

The focus of this Patchouli cosplay photoshoot was on warm lighting placement within a dim environment. To recreate the character's traits from Touhou Project, I prepared a purple short wig with carefully trimmed bangs, paired with chain-accented rimless glasses to increase character recognizability. The costume features a Lolita fashion dress, where tiered ruffles and bows were intricate to wear; the pearl necklace at the chest and lace along the neckline required meticulous positioning to prevent cluttered lines on camera. The cap was styled quite full and puffed, requiring numerous bobby pins to secure properly alongside the headwear.

The most demanding element was the Glowing book prop. To capture light emanating from inside the pages, a small LED strip was concealed within the book. Angling had to be carefully controlled during the shoot—illuminating the face without causing blinding flare or overexposure. On set, both warm and cool light sources were utilized: cool ambient light washed over the dress, contrasting with the warm yellow glow of the book to enhance the magical atmosphere. The shoot required constant sitting posture adjustments to ensure the lace skirt hem spread out naturally, while transitioning my gaze between the book and the lens, taking considerable time. The entire shoot prioritized subtraction over complexity, keeping poses simple to emphasize the character's serenity. The fabric texture held up well under dim lighting, and post-processing avoided excessive touch-ups, focusing primarily on preserving lighting depth in this Anime-style photography piece.
