Looking at this photo set, it feels as if I'm returning to that warm afternoon filled with the scent of printing ink. The theme of this photoshoot is Patchouli Knowledge from Touhou Project.
For this witch who resides year-round in the underground Great Library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, her temperament has a natural synergy with our set design. The overall style this time leans toward a warm and fresh Lolita aesthetic, utilizing abundant flowers, vines, and wooden elements to construct this "Gensokyo Garden Reading Room."
Let's talk about the styling. The costume comes from Witch's Fabric, featuring a lightweight, airy chiffon texture in lavender and milky white tones with intricately layered ruffles on the skirt. The oversized pink-and-white bonnet in particular, piled high with layered frills and lace, pairs with the purple braided twin-tail wig to create an adorably top-heavy visual charm. Yet when worn, moving around reveals fabric as light and airy as clouds without feeling burdensome at all.
To match Patchouli's library persona, we avoided overly bright lighting, opting instead to utilize the afternoon natural light streaming through the white window frames. Photographer 知梦里 is adept at capturing diffuse light and shadow, using soft lighting to render the lace and pleated textures on the skirt clearly visible while preventing blown-out highlights.
Regarding props, the vintage handmade book held in my hands is the centerpiece. The reddish-brown cover is embellished with small purple and white daisies, which we attached by hand to echo the surrounding floral vines, creating a harmonious blend where person and scenery become one.
Notably, the styling contains many thoughtful touches. For example, the black cat paw gloves on the wrists add a touch of witchy mystery while providing an excellent color contrast against the light-toned outfit. The white bow slouch socks and white shoes subtly frame the leg lines, working with the asymmetrical tulle skirt to elongate the lower body proportions in seated shots. The White stockings serve to balance the intricate complexity of the upper body, grounding the visual weight to appear demure with a hint of youthful playfulness.
During the shoot, because the bonnet was so large, turning slightly could easily block my line of sight, so I had to maintain an upright, seated posture as much as possible. Actions like turning book pages or glancing down to touch flowers had to be minimal, which unexpectedly imbued the photos with a deeply introspective, focused emotional state.
In post-production, we preserved the warm, high-key feel of the raw photos, avoiding heavy shadow grading and gently lifting the shadows so the lavender dress harmonized seamlessly with the surrounding pale flowers. This luminous tone creates a dreamy fusion between subject and background, perfectly capturing Gensokyo's secluded, otherworldly atmosphere. As a Touhou Project creative work, despite the intricate and elaborate costume, experiencing every shutter click capturing light and shadow made this entire character portrayal deeply rewarding in Atmospheric photography.
