Once the overall direction for this look was settled, the main focus during early wig styling and makeup was on hair color layering and the sharpness of the gaze. Teal and red highlights can easily look messy if mishandled, so the spray coloring and trimming of the wig focused heavily on edge transitions. This ensured a natural gradient between strands, delivering a visual effect of raw crimson bursting forth from deep darkness.
The red bracer on the arm was given a cracked textured paint finish. Simulating this effect of weathered leather or cracked rock put our weathering craft to the test; it couldn't look too pristine, as it needed to give the audience a sense of battle-hardened history. Correspondingly, the silver-white spliced armor on the right shoulder—with its geometric faceting and metallic color mixing—presented challenging flatness tolerances during prop fabrication. Excessive gloss on silver-white can look cheap, so we intentionally applied matte and selective flat-finish coats during painting, avoiding an overly bright shine so it wouldn't overpower the rest of the outfit.
For facial makeup, to complement the character's slightly perilous edge, the eyeliner angle and eyeshadow smudge range were adjusted several times before finalizing a look paired with red contact lenses. Since the eyes are virtually the only exposed facial feature in the frame, the expressiveness of the gaze is paramount. I even applied specialized upper and lower eyeshadows to sculpt the contours of a battle maniac or a cold, calculative operative.
During shooting, multiple layers of red backdrops were used primarily to reinforce color cohesion, preventing a busy background from drowning out character details. The lighting setup combined side-backlighting with frontal fill light. This approach highlighted prop speculars cleanly—such as the curved reflections on the silver shoulder armor and the texture of the black leather gloves—while smooth shadow gradients pushed the three-dimensional depth to its maximum. With an all-red backdrop, the subject can easily catch an unwanted red cast, so careful white balance calibration in post was essential to keep skin tones clean and luminous.
The pose of raising an arm to half-conceal the face wasn't artificially staged; while testing poses, we found it exceptionally effective for blocking excessive heavy shadows while creating dynamic lines interacting with the red fragment props on the face. For this gesture and the curl of the fingers, careful attention was paid to joint tension—avoiding rigid or unnatural fingers inside gloves and maintaining a natural, relaxed articulation between digits.
The overall style leans toward a fusion of Techwear and fantasy elements. Rather than piling on excessive embellishments, the outfit relies on strong color-blocking contrasts (black, red, white, and teal) to establish visual weight. Material choices combined faux leather and hard metallic lacquer with straps and small pendants. Although without long sleeves or intricate skirt trains, the shoulder armor alone made the upper silhouette look remarkably upright. Complex structural props like these demand strict body posture from the cosplayer—any slight shift in center of gravity easily causes slouching. During the shoot, I paid special attention to my neck and shoulder line, drawing my shoulders slightly back to transform the physical weight of the metallic armor into an upright, commanding posture of strength.
Wearing comfort was admittedly a pain point with this outfit; the joints connecting metallic pieces and leather harnesses tended to pinch or catch when moving around. However, the character's distinct identity stems precisely from these details, so a seamless, snug fit during wear was essential. Fortunately, after several fittings, I figured out the quickest way to put on and take off this armor, saving considerable time on set.
Prior to the shoot, I reviewed numerous reference images in detail, aiming to capture that contrast true to the lore—faithfully recreating her cold, enigmatic temperament while ensuring the photos maintained dynamic vitality rather than looking like a rigid mannequin. Red and black dominate the palette with high contrast, which risks causing the face and props to blend into the red backdrop. Thus, we brought the light sources closer for hard lighting, using sharp specular dividing lines to define the edges of different material textures.
