[Firefly cosplay] Clear Skies and Sea Breezes of Sanya: Recreating Honkai: Star Rail's Chasing the Light

After nearly a half-month of non-stop rain in Shanghai, I made a spontaneous decision to fly to Sanya for this shoot. I brought along Firefly's Chasing the Light outfit, dominated by white, teal, and aqua hues that aligned effortlessly with the sunlit climate of Sanya. Prior to departing, I worried that long-distance transit might crush the wig and dress silhouette, but seeing the brilliant sunshine upon landing immediately put my mind at ease. On the first afternoon, we headed straight to the seaside intending to shoot at sunset; however, the glare was too intense, so we rescheduled the session for the morning and used a courtyard fountain as our setting.

The fountain's white marble was inherently clean, and the splashing water lent a crisp, refreshing translucency. For full-body framing, we deliberately angled upward from below to lengthen the legs. The most striking element of Chasing the Light is the skirt flare and thigh strap—their semi-sheer materials require backlighting to bring out the delicate fabric weave. I had an assistant continuously fan the air or waited for the natural sea breeze to catch the skirt floating mid-air. In heavy gusts, facial control was tough since stray strands whipped across my face, taking nearly an hour to capture that one satisfying, dynamic full-body shot.

Moving up the stairs afterward, the sharp geometric lines of the steps allowed the stone wall to block harsh glare, casting clean shadows. Under shade, the sheer white tulle avoided overexposure, evoking a soft, sophisticated elegance instead. For close-up half-body shots, we focused on garment nuances: the pearl necklace and sheer gloves caught radiant reflections brilliantly.

The greenhouse sequence was an unexpected bonus. Originally meant as a quick rest break, we noticed that the verdant moss and light filtering through the glass ceiling looked sublime, even allowing mirror reflections to craft a dual-image composition packed with atmosphere. The gentle green tint reflected off the greenhouse foliage kept the makeup looking crisp and luminous.

Because of the high island humidity, makeup setting was paramount. To prevent sweat from ruining the base, I baked the face twice, ensuring steady all-day wear. The internal corset tailored the waist cleanly to accentuate body contours, while pairing Stockings with the thigh strap grounded the visual center of gravity nicely.

In post-processing, I noticed that outdoor direct light made the white tulle look a bit gray, so I boosted contrast and reduced highlight bloom while making sure no pure blacks or blown-out whites were lost. The outfit is designed with luminescent accents that aren't obvious in daylight, yet they cast lovely refractions when light passes through. While traveling for this summer shoot was physically exhausting, it captured precious moments across diverse lighting conditions. My favorite remains the fountain shot—free from crowd clutter, with a background that is purely pristine.
