Today I completed an Outdoor cosplay photoshoot of Cirno from Touhou Project. For this shoot, we selected a grassy meadow beside a natural pond, primarily to echo the evocative atmosphere of the Misty Lake. The Ice Fairy concept naturally intertwines crisp aloofness with youthful innocence; to channel her confident, even subtly tsundere "Strongest" presence, we devoted substantial effort to choreographing gestures and expressions.
First, regarding the wardrobe: this location attire was meticulously crafted by Qinlao Pushi Baicaicai. The ensemble embraces a blue-and-white Lolita fashion silhouette, featuring multi-tiered sheer skirts adorned with lavish lace trims that billow with airy grace in motion. A red bow at the collar serves as a vibrant, eye-catching color-contrast accent. The Sequined wings on the back were the absolute highlight of the look—translucent diamond-shaped structures infused with teal-and-blue sequins that refracted light into ever-shifting glints under natural sunlight. The oversized bow headpiece atop the head carries considerable volume, requiring sturdy pins anchored into the wig to maintain balance, which was another small detail demanding vigilance on set.
Styling the wig also required care. The short light-blue hair was layered cleanly, with bangs trimmed precisely to brow length. To build airy volume, the roots were crimped and lifted with a flat iron, allowing the tips to curve inward naturally. Paired with bright blue contact lenses and soft, rosy makeup, the overall facial aesthetic mirrored the delicate charm of 2D character art.
The weather on shoot day was wonderful, offering gentle, diffused light. Photographer Shuqing invested great care into framing compositions. In the finished shots, crystal-clear reflections across the water surface are readily visible, enriching spatial depth. To capture the seated shot atop rocks by the water's edge, I stepped barefoot onto moss-draped boulders while maintaining balance. Though the waterside was wet and slick, the resulting frames captured that lore-accurate image of the Ice Fairy dwelling beside pristine waters.
In terms of expressive performance, Cirno is deeply charismatic—straightforward, boastful, and eager to declare herself the strongest. In tight close-ups, I incorporated gestures like reaching toward the camera or tilting my chin slightly upward, using the blue eyes and refined makeup to project resolute self-assurance. For the shot amid the sea of flowers, I relaxed my posture completely, spreading both arms outward to express weightless buoyancy.
We encountered a few minor hurdles throughout the session. For instance, because the skirt was voluminous, sitting on the rocks risked spreading it into the damp soil, requiring my assistant to help arrange the hemline before every pose. Furthermore, the specialized material of the wings was prone to blowing out with overexposed glare under intense natural light, requiring constant camera angle recalibrations or using my body to partially shade direct rays. While navigating the set in this attire was cumbersome, reviewing the monitor validated every ounce of effort.
The entire shoot was a thoroughly rewarding experience. Blending wigs, costumes, and props with organic landscapes to bring a 2D character to life is profoundly gratifying. Heartfelt gratitude to the photographer for their dedication and to the creator for their exquisite craftsmanship in bringing this vision to life. I look forward to exploring more diverse styling directions and continuing the journey of outdoor photography.
