The outfit features a black-and-white retro Lolita design, combining a white lace puff-sleeved blouse with a black pinafore dress, accented by delicate lace trimming and bodice corset lacing. To faithfully portray the character, I chose a long golden wavy wig, carefully styling it to add volume and avoid looking flat on camera. The hat is the true centerpiece of the look: a black wide-brimmed witch hat adorned with tiered white lace, pearls, and petite ornaments. However, wearing it tested my neck endurance, requiring constant poise throughout the shoot.
For the makeup, I focused on the eyes, deepening the sockets with reddish-toned eyeshadow and lifting the eyeliner for a sharper gaze, accompanied by matching blush to enhance facial depth under warm lighting. The setting was arranged as a Vintage study to create a quiet, enigmatic atmosphere. The desk was lined with distressed newsprint and stacked with hefty antique tomes, kerosene lamps, and candles.
Illumination relied primarily on the warm yellow light of the kerosene lamp, complemented by candlelight on the right to achieve a low-key chiaroscuro aesthetic. I leaned against a dark-green leather armchair, holding a small black folding fan in one hand while resting the other on the open pages of a book. A chess set was deliberately positioned in the foreground to enrich the visual layering. Controlling the light posed the greatest hurdle: because the light source was positioned low, it easily cast deep shadows, requiring continuous adjustments to my facial angle to ensure catchlights met the lamp's glow.
The wide cuffs and oversized collar were prone to bunching during larger gestures, so the photographer continually guided my posture, refining my leaning angle and how I held the fan. To bring out Marisa's contemplative side, I also tried poses turning pages or studying the chess board. Throughout the shoot, I immersed myself in the study environment, imagining Marisa absorbed in grimoires within the Great Library. During retouching, we preserved the authentic golden warmth of the kerosene flame rather than overhauling the color base, merely refining skin texture and cleaning color cast to achieve a cinematic still quality.
To enrich the character portrayal, I put deliberate care into my posing nuances—resting the folding fan lightly beneath my chin or propping my cheek while gazing at an open book, letting these quiet touches expand the emotional resonance of still images. While stunning, the oversized brim posed a challenge, as tilting my head too low obscured half my face; I had to maintain a slightly tucked chin throughout, leaving my neck quite sore over time. Yet seeing the resulting interplay of light and shadow rendered every ounce of effort worthwhile.
I also took precautions regarding garment textures. The cuffs and neckline held dense lace, so we tested multiple lighting angles beforehand to prevent harsh blowouts. When styling the wig, it was vital to maintain curl structure while allowing natural, airy wisps to avoid a stiff look. These subtleties often determine the caliber of a cosplay set. The scattered chess pieces served as leading lines from the foreground, guiding visual focus back to the subject. Tuning the photos to warm amber tones harmonized naturally with the aged wooden bookshelves and vintage leather sofa. Behind every photo lay repeated calibrations of light, shadow, and composition.
