[Flandre Scarlet Cosplay] Touhou Project Scarlet Devil Mansion Fan Setting Convention Photo: The Red Sprite in the Dark Night

The results of this Flandre Scarlet convention photo set are much closer to the fantastical atmosphere of the Scarlet Devil Mansion secondary setting in my heart than I had anticipated. Since I decided to cosplay this character, the accuracy and the overall "fairy-tale feel" were the core focus of my preparation. The wig chosen was a light golden fluffy curly look, paired with her iconic white lace ruffled bonnet and deep red ribbons, with that small brown bear head decoration intentionally added to the top.

For the costume, I selected a red-and-white multi-layered dress. The upper body features a white ruffled wide-sleeved shirt with red lace-up crisscross details at the neckline, paired with a yellow-backed bow tie to deliver highly distinct layers. The corset uses a dark red fabric with black crisscross lacing, beautifully cinching the waistline visually. The skirt hem of the lower body is designed to be exceptionally puffy, with multiple layers of red and white lace edges overlapping to produce a gorgeous swing amplitude when walking or jumping. Combined with red round-toe leather shoes and white lace trim at the ankles, the overall styling layers a magnificence unique to the Scarlet Devil Mansion on top of a classic Lolita style base.

The prop preparation can be considered the highlight of this convention photo shoot. The black hooked long-handled staff in my hand, as well as the colorful glowing gemstone crystals hanging from the curved metal rod, required a strong sense of customization. Additionally, the brown teddy bear plushie was a key prop, serving not just as a coordinating element but as an expression of the character's childlike innocence. To perfectly present the magical atmosphere from the "fan secondary setting" in front of the lens, we incorporated under-lighting and backlighting during the shoot, carefully controlling the light angles on-site so those acrylic gemstones could produce natural refractions.

The actual shooting environment was selected in a dimmer indoor space, perfectly matching that dark, mysterious yet color-conflicted vibe of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. To emphasize the "magic" attribute, we intentionally introduced partial red lighting or red reflections during the session, which laid an excellent foundation for the post-production synthesis of red energy particle special effects and red flowing light. The entire shooting process included quite a few "airborne" actions and levitation segments. For instance, to capture that unconstrained sense of levitation, I needed to master my center balance while keeping the skirt hem and hair strands dynamic; meanwhile, the teddy bear prop had to be tossed mid-air, requiring numerous takes before selecting the ideal angle, which truly tested my physical stamina.

When portraying characters based on fan secondary settings, it heavily relies on whether the cosplayer can enact that unique trait of being slightly dangerous yet carrying a childlike, innocent playfulness. In front of the camera, I tried my best to use half-closed eyes and the intense gaze of red pupils to coordinate with the glowing props, utilizing physical movements instead of overly exaggerated expressions to convey the character's dramatic tension. Judging from the results of this convention photo set, the combination of the red light special effects and the color-blocking of my own outfit turned out quite well, rendering that slightly tipsy and fantastical nighttime atmosphere belonging to the Scarlet Devil Mansion. This set also counts as a highly satisfying recent attempt of mine in prop recreation and atmospheric control for this Fan Content Festival contribution, successfully materializing that tsundere, mischievous little demon image with massive destructive power from the secondary setting.
