[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Restoring the Classical Charm in Honkai: Star Rail

This shoot features Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail, and this costume and styling can be said to be the one I spent the most effort aligning with recently. From receiving the outfit to breaking in the details, and then to the set layout and testing on the day of the shoot, the whole process was actually much more complicated than imagined, but the final photo results truly make me feel it was all worth it. Today, I'll take this opportunity to seriously share the shooting experience and some details of this set of photos with everyone.
Let's first talk about the character's styling setup. Black hair paired with dip-dyed blue-green hair ends is a very visually distinct feature of the character Ruan Mei. To restore this hair color, I specially customized a wig with a gradient blue-green treatment at the hair ends, so that it presents better layers under the illumination of light. And the blue-green colored contacts can be said to be the crowning touch of the entire styling. Coordinated with the translucency of the makeup, it removes excess heavy colors, preserving an inward yet very soft conveyance of the gaze.
The clothing details are also very interesting. The top section is a white off-the-shoulder design, featuring highly exquisite lace and ruffles along the edges. The shoulder skin exposure is just right, and together with that ring of hanging ornaments with green gems on the neck accessory, it adds a visual center point to the whole look. Although the deep blue part looks like a waist girdle or skirt hem, it actually adopts a velvet fabric with a pearlescent reflective effect. This material presents a very profound luster under flashlights or fill lights, forming a sharp light-dark contrast with the white top.
I have always attached great importance to the pairing of gloves, and this time I selected an asymmetrical one-white and one-blue design. The deep blue long glove on the left hand carries gold decorative buckles with metallic elements, giving a sharp feel, while the white lace glove on the right hand adds a touch of softness. The thigh ring at the thigh plus the white lace trim at the ankle—these small details not only visually elongate the leg lines but also add some design layering and magnificence.
For the scene arrangement of this shoot, we deliberately created a Chinese-style atmosphere full of traditional textures. The wooden lattice screen and Chinese low table in the background laid a vintage tone, and the addition of pink and purple flowers enhanced the softness of the entire frame. A white plush blanket was spread on the floor; when sitting or leaning on it, one's entire texture softens along with it.
Speaking of props, that blue-green plucked string instrument is actually one of the soul props of this frame. Its body color strongly echoes my hair's dip-dyed color, and with the golden border decorations, it creates a very powerful sense of composition in the frame. In addition, the circular tuanshan fan held in the second picture was also specially prepared by me for this styling look. Pink flowers are embroidered on the fan surface, and holding it in hand brings a solid feeling of handling traditional elegance at my fingertips.
In terms of selecting the shooting light, this time we abandoned that pure bright-toned lighting and instead adopted a mixed atmospheric light with purple and blue undertones. This lighting method is highly suitable for this kind of Chinese-style cosplay look carrying a hint of mystery, allowing the dark areas to have color shifts while making the texture of the highlights casting onto the velvet skirt and hair look exceptionally beautiful in this Atmospheric photography session. We also chose quite a few angles during the shoot, such as reclining on the side, leaning forward with the chin in hand, and looking back with a gentle smile. Every posture had to coordinate with the props and light/shadow positions, and even the finger placement when holding the instrument and the fan had to be repeatedly fine-tuned to look natural.
My favorite shot in this set of photos is that freeze-frame leaning forward (which is the third image). Combined with the left hand reaching out and the gaze staring directly into the lens, it delivers that unique "charm" of Ruan Mei that is slightly detached yet certain. Many people think Ruan Mei's highlight lies in her apparel, but I think it lies more in her nonchalant attitude toward the surrounding environment.
I feel this shoot relatively completely restored that layer of coolness and elegance on this character. Good Anime cosplay isn't just about putting on the character's clothes, but about making these garments, wigs, and props present a sense of life in front of the lens.
