Having just posted this Yunli photoshoot, my arms still ache at the memory of hoisting that massive broadsword. We opted for an indoor set featuring a colossal circular wooden window backed by vertical lattices; warm amber backlighting poured through, anchoring the composition in classical, enigmatic serenity. Because dynamic range was steep, on-set fill lighting required patience; our photographer continually tweaked cool-toned lateral rim lights to chisel crisp contours along my silhouette while preserving the ambient warmth of the backdrop. Carved Chinese wooden tables and porcelain vases further heightened atmospheric immersion.
The weapon served as the core anchor of our prep. This polearm broadsword was colossal in scale, detailed with fiery orange-red flame motifs along the blade and fitted with integrated LED illumination. Though lighter than real steel, sustaining a formal seiza kneeling pose while wielding it put tremendous strain on my wrists and forearms. To maintain composed poise before the lens, I had to shake out my arms between takes. Yet under the strobes, its glowing finish looked breathtaking, partnering with the crimson cape to amplify visual dynamism.
Wardrobe details for this Yunli cosplay deserve special mention. The off-the-shoulder white top paired with layered teal-and-blue miniskirts patterned with intricate gold filigree. The large circular chest medallion with a black core, alongside gold-and-blue bracers, defined the character's signature silhouette. To keep lines clean during movement, I carefully trimmed the blackish-blue short wig to flatter my face, topping it with the teal-gemmed golden tiara as the crowning touch.
Makeup balanced youthful sweetness with martial resolve: deepened eye contours paired with soft pink lips kept expressions gentle yet unwavering. Poses drew inspiration from traditional Wuxia sword-holding stances—gripping the hilt with both hands and keeping the spine tall. Strong backlighting made capturing facial nuances challenging, requiring the photographer to guide my head angles continuously to catch precise catchlights in the eyes.
A funny highlight was how friends tagged the caption with Baby food. Despite holding a hardcore weapon, the warm color grading and my softer expression created an adorable contrast, prompting jokes that the shoot was as gentle and harmless as wholesome Baby food. This playful contrast infused the set with lighthearted charm.
The shoot was physically taxing; although seemingly just kneeling, keeping the back and arms taut demanded constant core engagement, leaving red pressure marks on my knees and wrists. Yet translating a 2D heroine into three dimensions through Anime cosplay—from material sourcing and makeup to prop mechanics and final edits—is an exhilarating journey. Channeling Yunli within such an evocative set was deeply fulfilling, fueling my passion to explore diverse characters ahead.
