[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Brushing the Fan Under the Moon, a Cool Frame of Chinese Elegance

This set of Ruan Mei photoshoots achieved the expected texture from prep to shooting. The combination of makeup and hair, in particular, found a very comfortable visual balance within the traditional Chinese theme.

Regarding the makeup, to highlight the character's cool yet gentle oriental temperament, I chose a clean and translucent base paired with light-colored eyeshadow. The bright blue colored contacts are very striking under the light, and the trimming of the black hair also focused on the layers of the bangs in front, with a strand of blue-green highlights at the edge, giving the hairstyle a sense of motion even when static.

The clothing design features many details. The blue, white, and brown color-blocking fits the theme well. The top has an off-the-shoulder cut that beautifully outlines the neckline and shoulder lines. The golden metal buckles on the chest and the bow decorations within the spliced fabric draw the overall visual focus to the upper body. The pleated hem of the skirt, paired with petal tassels at the hips, looks lightweight and layered. Complemented by black leather gloves and black lace-up leg straps, it neutralizes the softness of the Chinese-style clothing, adding a bit of sharp and cold temperament. The black lace-up heels on the feet also elongate the proportions from the calves to the ankles beautifully.

A lot of effort went into preparing the props for this set of photos. The most classic oil-paper umbrella shows clear rib textures under the studio lighting, making it perfect as a compositional element for wide shots. The black flute paired with green jade and red tassels exudes a scholarly aura, whether held horizontally or leaned against. The hand-painted orchid pattern and delicate tassels on the round fan echo perfectly with the calligraphy scrolls in the background. Finally, in the Go match scene, the board and scattered black and white stones make the entire setting more three-dimensional.

During the shoot, the photographer's lighting setup was a huge help. In addition to the conventional warm-toned traditional lanterns, the moonlight night scene set projected cool-toned light onto the branches and ribbons, cooperating with the simulated full moon in the background to create the texture of a gentle night breeze. In the indoor scene built with scrolls and screens, adjusting the angle of the ribbons gave the frame a sense of flowing movement.

The smooth completion of this shoot was inseparable from the makeup and hair artist's meticulous adjustments to the wig and costume beforehand, as well as the photographer's quick shutter capture. Although it was quite tiring to frequently switch props and strike poses during the shoot, seeing those cool, restrained lights and shadows with delicate textures in the final portrait photography made it all feel completely worth it. The effect of this traditional style cosplay look combined with the props ultimately brought the artistic conception I wanted to convey to a perfect realization.
