[Ruan Mei cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail: Xianzhou Charm in Widescreen Ancient Style Photography

This set of Ruan Mei photos was finally completed during a spell of great weather. While organizing the materials today, I wanted to chat with fellow fans about the concepts behind this shoot and a few stories from the set.

When selecting this character for creation, what drew me in most was her aloof, reserved, yet subtly mysterious aura. The color scheme of the costume is exquisitely considered—a large area of bright blue along the lower hem paired with pure white and soft pink tones on the upper body. This contrast is eye-catching without losing feminine softness. In particular, the pink ribbon around the neck and the striking green gemstone pendant serve as the finishing touches for the upper body Cosplay outfit, echoing her noble purity. For makeup, I opted against heavy, exaggerated tones, choosing instead cool-toned smudging around the eyes paired with light contact lenses, hoping to convey that calm, detached presence through my gaze.

For this Outdoor cosplay shoot, we specifically chose a garden landscape featuring natural rock faces and stone balustrades. The photographer repeatedly emphasized that the contrast between character fabric textures and weathered stone grain would produce fantastic results. This proved completely true—the off-white stone railings formed striking visual contrast against the vibrant blue dress. The lighting on location was near-perfect, with sunlight slanting from the upper side to create beautiful hair rim highlights while casting deep shadows into rock crevices for a powerful sense of spatial depth.

Regarding the sentiment that \"Ancient style photography belongs in widescreen,\" I wholeheartedly agree. Within traditional Chinese garden environments, landscape orientation truly showcases the expansive openness of the scenery. During shooting, we intentionally pulled back the camera position, placing the character along leading lines formed by stone railings in widescreen framing—showcasing rustic environment aesthetics without letting the character look sparse. Of course, we captured many close-ups as well; Photo 1's tight shot clearly illustrates upper-body outfit details, hairpiece textures, and makeup layering. Overall, however, widescreen framing better carries the visual tension of classical Eastern elegance.

Working on set with photographer @Cookie🍪-sama felt incredibly in sync. In truth, when shooting Ancient style photography under natural sunlight, capturing expressions is the hardest part. Because daylight shifts rapidly and moving foliage shadows continuously alter light patterns across the face, we mostly relied on burst capture to seize that most natural moment matching her persona. Whether seated or leaning against stone railings, keeping my back straight required constant effort, as her posture remains consistently elegant and poised.

This shoot also had a few unforgettable moments. To pursue an ethereal atmosphere, we shuttled back and forth through mossy, vegetation-covered rocks, where wearing high heels on uneven stone surfaces severely tested my balance. Summer outdoor insects presented another formidable challenge during this Outdoor cosplay session. Yet I think this is precisely the charm of location cosplay—hard work and sweat ultimately translate into frozen moments that breathe authentic life into the photos.

Overall, this shoot of Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail deepened my three-dimensional understanding of her character. Beyond restoring costume and props in Cosplay, shaping emotion and mood is equally essential. This widescreen Ancient style photography endeavor stands as a successful real-location attempt, and I hope it provides creative inspiration for fellow fans.
