Pre-production for this Ruan Mei cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail was a bit more involved than anticipated. To capture her hairstyle, I prepared a long wig with a black base and teal-green highlights. The bangs required careful layered trimming, with portions of the hair draping across the chest while the rest was pinned at the back, finished with a golden geometric hairpin and a small white blossom to establish the overall silhouette. Once we secured a suitable backdrop within the exhibition hall, shooting commenced.
Great care went into the makeup. To align with the character concept, I wore bright blue contact lenses. Eye makeup focused on the outer corners and lower eyelids, blended with reddish and pink eyeshadow to introduce a subtle flush, while the lip shade remained a natural rosy tone that brightened the complexion without overpowering the face. The base makeup remained lightweight to preserve natural skin texture.
The wardrobe features rich layering. The neckline boasts a navy stand collar centered by an ornate knotted gold frog button, creating textural contrast with the pearl necklace and metallic clasps. A white cropped capelet with pale piping and gold accents is draped over the shoulders, layered above a dark corset with intricate patterning. Wearing dark leather gloves bordered with gold trim immediately anchored the character's poised aura; their sturdy tactile quality prevented hand gestures and clenched poses from appearing flimsy on camera.
Shooting on-site at a convention presents complex lighting with scattered circular bokeh, but the photographer skillfully leveraged the ambient light. In the first shot, I turned three-quarters with my gaze trailing out of frame, maintaining a serene, tranquil expression to highlight my profile contour and gaze. In the second shot, facing the lens directly, I raised both hands with curved fingers to strike a spellcasting incantation pose. We rehearsed this gesture multiple times to strike the right balance of controlled firmness without stiffness, paired with a faint, elusive smile that kept the expression restrained yet lively in the eyes.
Moving through the crowded hall in this traditional Chinese style fantasy outfit was undeniably warm with so many overlapping fabric layers. With so many accessories, every posture shift required checking that the capelet and necklace hadn't drifted, testing body poise throughout. Yet seeing the final frames on the camera display made every effort worthwhile. The core of this shoot lay in faithfully reproducing garment textures and sustaining that cool, detached composure without over-dramatization. It was an intensely focused experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the photographer on every fine adjustment.
