The Japanese-style elements and elegant temperament of the character Kamisato Ayaka from Genshin Impact are things I have always wanted to try to recreate. This time, I collaborated with a photographer to shoot a look with a black, white, and gold color scheme, also aiming to showcase the character's cool and ethereal feel through the design of this outfit.
Let's start with the styling preparation. This white wig took a lot of effort to style, especially the blunt bangs and the long hair on both sides, which needed to drape naturally while retaining a voluminous texture. The large, light grey bow on top of the head is a crowning touch, making the entire head styling look three-dimensional. The golden hair accessories used on both sides, paired with black satin ribbons and exquisite metal pendants, look incredibly outstanding in close-up shots. The black choker worn around the neck features a golden tassel pendant, forming a wonderful echo with the overall outfit's color palette, which counts as a highly recognizable little piece of ingenuity.
Looking at the outfit, it uses black as the primary base tone, combined with large areas of white ruffles and golden piping decorations, creating both contrast and a sense of magnificence visually. The wide sleeves feature layers upon layers of white lace trim, and the neckline section has a dark inner lining outlined with gold trim, making the design deeply layered. The waist is also paired with blue rope knot elements, adding a touch of cool-toned highlight to the vast black-and-white color palette. The lower body is paired with white boots, with golden laces intricately wrapped around the legs like vines, combined with thick-soled black geta sandals to elevate the overall solemnity and vintage aura. The black leather gloves on the hands are also part of the styling; I realized later that when holding props, the black gloves form a sharp visual contrast with the fair skin, giving it a very premium feel.
Regarding props, we prepared two pieces this time. A slender black tachi, with black, white, and gold detailed patterns on the scabbard and hilt, feels heavy in hand, instantly boosting the overall presence when held. The other is a folding fan with a blue-and-gold striped surface; when composing the shots, the gesture of partially covering the face with the fan helps create an introverted and soft atmosphere.
On the day of the shoot, we specifically chose dark wooden fences and white flower branches as the background, paired with a white plush carpet to create a serene and tranquil courtyard environment. The photographer put a lot of effort into the lighting, employing a high-contrast lighting setup between light and dark to make the white folds of the dress and the contours of the face more three-dimensional, while forming distinct layers of shadows around the shoulders and neck, which beautifully highlighted the skin texture.
In terms of capturing the postures, we experimented with two different vibes. The posture of sitting on the floor while holding the unsheathed sword, combined with a low-angle overhead shot perspective, showcases the cool, detached, and steady side of the character. On the other hand, the mid-close-up close-up holding the folding fan near the face uses a wide aperture for background blur, focusing the frame entirely on the facial expressions and the texture of the folding fan, delivering a sense of relaxation and elegance. Especially when using the folding fan to cover half of the face with a gaze carrying a touch of chill and detachment, I feel that specific expression was captured perfectly.
The entire photo set did not utilize overly intense color grading but used cool grey and dark tones as the primary base tone to fit the character's inherently dignified and calm personality. The makeup was also kept as light as possible, emphasizing the blue-grey eye makeup to reinforce the clear, transparent feel of the gaze.
During the shooting process, I am very grateful to the photographer for his precise control over composition and light and shadow. Actually, the overall photography delivery workflow went much smoother than I imagined. Although putting on these complex clothes and accessories takes some time, the final outcome perfectly met expectations. Many props and costume details appeared even more powerful once the sample photos came out. I hope this anime cosplay work allows everyone to see a bit of the dedicated presentation I poured into this character.
