[Ruan Mei Cosplay] The Xianzhou Aesthetic of Honkai: Star Rail — Life is More Than Respiration

This Ruan Mei look has captured my heart ever since I first saw her official design artwork. Her cool yet slightly mysterious temperament, combined with the interwoven blue-and-gold color scheme and traditional Chinese style cosplay elements, is truly perfect for presenting slowly in front of the lens. For this shoot, we prepared three different scene setups. The first one features a lazy pose holding a fan against a calligraphy scroll backdrop; the light and shadow are cast very softly, which, combined with the warm light of the lanterns, elevates the atmosphere of the character. The second one shows me sitting on a high platform cradling a pipa; this prop is truly the soul of the entire photo set. The small floral decorations and tassels at the pegbox, along with the lacquer texture of the body, feel substantial in hand, making me genuinely admire the craftsmanship of the prop maker. The third one, which is this standing pose I selected, features me standing in front of a solid blue background with one hand slightly raised and the other holding a round fan. This angle perfectly displays the garment's waistline design, the lines of the skirt's slit, and the details of the gloves and pearl neckpiece.

Regarding the makeup and wig, I specially adjusted my eye color, selecting light blue colored contacts to match the character's setting. The wig features a black base with a gradient blue-green finish at the ends, paired with a golden flower hair accessory on the side, achieving a unified yet far from monotonous look in terms of color. Before the shoot, I spent a long time smoothing out the layers of the outfit, especially the hollow-out patchwork on the chest, the petal-shaped ornaments at the belt, and the semi-transparent white sheer shawl on my arms. Every layer had to be neatly arranged to capture an effect that is both flowy and structured. The photographer was also very patient, constantly adjusting the reflector boards and light angles to bring out different highlights and shadows on the blue fabric under the light. Presenting this kind of material texture is truly a test of lighting.

Speaking of props, the orchid pattern on that round fan was hand-painted, which gracefully complements the blue tones of the costume. The center of gravity and balance of the pipa was also very interesting; to prevent it from tilting, the angle and strength of my hands had to be precisely controlled during the shoot—it needed to look effortless and natural, yet remain held firmly. This kind of hardcore shooting process is actually quite physically demanding, but seeing the effects in the final images makes all the hardship completely worth it.

For the overall style, I leaned toward incorporating some natural body interactions while preserving the character's inherently calm and cold temperament, such as half-covering my face with the fan or gazing into the distance, keeping the frame from looking too rigid. The choice of scenes was also highly deliberate: one features a real ancient style calligraphy scroll, while the other is a clean, solid-color studio shoot. These two completely distinct visual textures allow everyone to see the character's possibilities in different environments. The blue-and-gold color scheme of the costume itself is very eye-catching, but to avoid it looking too gaudy, we used pearls and metallic lines for balance, leaning the overall look toward a refined and premium feel.

As a cosplayer, every Honkai: Star Rail cosplay shoot is a brand-new interpretation of a character. This experience as Ruan Mei has given me a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese sci-fi themes, and makes me look forward to trying more creations of similar styles in the future. I hope these carefully prepared details and lens language allow everyone to feel the unique aesthetic charm of this character.
