[Ruan Mei cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail: Afterglow and Breeze of the Jiangnan Courtyard

Thread-bound books and simple ceramic vases on the wooden curio shelf, along with a warm-glowing paper lantern on the left side, set a fantastic tone for this Ruan Mei cosplay shoot. In terms of makeup and styling, the black slightly curly bun decorated with white floral hair accessories created a high-contrast visual clash with the deep-sea blue eyes. This costume choice features lake blue as the primary tone, combining a delicate white gauze shawl with a high-slit skirt design, complemented by metallic gold trim, making it appear both classically lightweight and refined to character design. Black leather gloves formed an interesting material clash with the airy tulle, which, together with the green and black leg band on the thigh, added character-specific details atop the traditional Chinese-style cosplay foundation.

Two different props were specifically prepared on set: a Chinese ink folding fan and a white round fan, assisting in expressing different emotional tension. During the shoot, photographer JC handled light and shadow brilliantly. Instead of relying on high-brightness flashes, we primarily used live paper lanterns and natural light filtering through windows, allowing warm yellow tones to diffuse beautifully over wooden furniture with rich layers. While posing, exaggerated movements were deliberately avoided, aiming to capture the character's elegant, relaxed state. The frontal shot where I held the white round fan with legs naturally crossed on the daybed delivered the best expression of the day. The round shape of the fan filled the center of the frame perfectly, while gaze naturally followed the skirt lines downward for a complete composition. The side profile turning-back shot was also very intriguing; the half-exposed shoulder line interwoven with light and shadow conveyed a subtle, casual sense of detachment.

The Chinese curio shelf behind me served as a vital element of the overall composition, its ornaments presenting well-arranged contours against the blurred background. I particularly loved the photo utilizing the circular hollow cutout of the shelf as a framing background; this framed composition naturally established the story setting while keeping visual focus firmly on me throughout. Shadow areas during shooting were handled very well—soft without harsh black clipping—making the image texture feel grounded in real-scene studio photography rather than flat like typical studio shots. The reason for choosing the seated posture holding the white round fan as the cover photo was that amidst the wooden-dominated scene, the highly saturated blue became the visual centerpiece, while the white fan surface beautifully balanced skin brightness, preventing the overall composition from looking dull.

The advantage of real-scene studio photography lies in existing furniture arrangements and porcelain displays providing an instant ambience. During breaks, we fine-tuned prop positions based on live setup, such as re-arranging birdcages and thread-bound books into staggered heights. For visuals blending blue-and-white highlights with dark wood textures, post-processing emphasized color separation, preserving both the translucency of blue and the grounded warmth of wood. Displaying contact lens transparency and controlling soft light on the face were also core focal points of this set; through repeated adjustments of camera position and light angles, harsh facial shadows were eliminated to build a soft, textured skin effect. The retro wood frame texture carried warmth, making subject and environment feel unified in a sense. To capture that comfortable, effortless state, I didn't remain stiff between shots, occasionally leaning back on the daybed to let the skirt scatter naturally—candid captures like these often carry far more vitality than rigid poses. Those blue-green platform shoes embellished with yellow flowers coordinated seamlessly with the overall palette. When shielding light or half-covering my face with the fan, I intentionally exposed my eyes so blue pupils became the visual highlight. Each photo in the set captured a distinct emotion—from frontal composure to side-profile lethargy, down to level-gaze close-ups—delivering clear visual depth. Every attempt at Chinese-style cosplay is a practical exercise in makeup, styling, and detail management. This shoot granted me a completely unique, serene experience, especially inside a real-scene studio whose atmosphere resonated so deeply with the character, like seeking Jiangnan in Ruan Mei's Melody.
