Capturing Ruan Mei's Plum Blossom Letter look from Honkai: Star Rail centered primarily on harmonizing multi-tiered fabric layers with nuanced set lighting. The cyan fabric layered over copious white lace and delicate ruffles created compelling visual contrast, yet dressing took considerable time, requiring constant vigilance on set to keep the drapery pristine. The pearl chains draped along the legs and the lace trim framing the ankles demanded meticulous repositioning with every change of pose. To stay faithful to this character design, I chose to shoot barefoot; perching lightly on the bamboo mat meant engaging my instep to keep leg lines fluid and organic. Furthermore, while the prop ruan instrument carried exquisite craftsmanship, holding it across extended takes became physically taxing, requiring micro-adjustments in grip strength to appear naturally poised.

For posing, I deliberately chose the cross-legged seated posture shown in Photo 2, as it elegantly accentuated the leg contours and the delicate ankle adornments. To elevate this angle, the photographer dropped to a relatively low perspective, framing the shot through foreground wooden crates and lantern lanterns to introduce immersive spatial depth. The circular blue window backdrop contrasted gorgeously against the foreground pink blossoms and warm amber lamplight—an interplay of cool detachment and gentle warmth faithfully preserved in post-processing. We explored numerous nuances to channel her aloof, scholarly aura, from directing eye sightlines to refining how casually the instrument rested in hand. Pairing green contact lenses with the eye makeup required subtle tweaks to brows and liner to flatter the studio lights. Though the Ancient style photoshoot demanded patience, every preparatory detail proved entirely worthwhile.
