This shoot of Ruan Mei's "Plum Letters in Blooming Snow" theme actually took quite a long time from planning to realization. Because the character of Ruan Mei possesses a peculiar, paradoxical aura that is both aloofly distant and gentle, nailing the wardrobe and atmosphere required considerable effort in this Ruan Mei cosplay.
For the costume, I chose to combine blue-and-white porcelain motifs with lavish lace. The top features a dark blue base patterned with white floral motifs, accented with a pink bow at the neckline and veiled by an outer layer of semi-sheer white tulle, aiming for a breezy, layered dimensionality when walking or reclining. To enhance the character's distinct classical charm, I specifically paired pearl thigh rings and white lace ankle bands with White stockings, completed by glossy navy high heels. In terms of subtle details, the teal highlights in the wig and the blue contact lenses were chosen to align more faithfully with the character's demeanor.
The most demanding test during this shoot was actually the prop. That blue pipa was not only gorgeously ornate, but also adorned with branches of pink plum blossoms and quite hefty in weight. Sitting on the carved wooden daybed, holding the instrument in one hand with the other gracefully raised while keeping my legs elegantly crossed seemed languid and effortless, but maintaining crisp body lines meant secretly engaging my core and waist so every angle could withstand the camera's scrutiny.
We poured immense thought into layering classical elements across the scene arrangement for this Ancient style photography. Behind me stood wooden folding screens, cyan-blue sheer drapes, and hanging scrolls depicting birds and flowers, complemented by thread-bound antique books and brush holders on the desk, dotted with plum blossoms, blue-and-white florals, and wooden candelabras. To bring rich visual depth, we spread a plush white fleece blanket, making the figure appear softer amidst the cool color palette. The on-set lighting was deliberately tuned to a cool bluish tone while preserving warm key light on the face to ensure expressive skin tones and vivid eyes.
When portraying Ruan Mei in Anime cosplay, the indifferent serenity of her gaze is the hardest nuance to master. Forcing it looks unnatural, while relaxing too much risks looking unfocused. Throughout the shoot, I continuously calibrated angles with the photographer to capture that effortless yet quietly focused state of mind. Wrapping up the shoot, though physically exhausted, seeing the character in the lens playing the pipa and immersed in her own quiet world made every bit of effort worth it—that is precisely the most mesmerizing magic of cosplay.
