For this shoot of Ruan Mei cosplay in the Plumblossom Letter design from Honkai: Star Rail, preparation took about half a month from fitting to the formal session. From the moment I received the costume, I could feel its high fidelity to the original character illustrations. The upper portion features a high lace collar and off-the-shoulder puff sleeves paired with an azure-blue velvet corset cincher, establishing clean, distinct layers. The green gemstone and pink ribbon bow at the chest, accented by cascading pearl chains, look remarkably exquisite before the lens. However, adjusting their placement required substantial time to ensure that lifting an arm or turning sideways gracefully highlighted the costume's aesthetic. Although velvet looks gorgeous, it fits snugly and places strict demands on posture; before shooting, I constantly reminded myself to keep my chest high and core engaged.
In terms of hair and makeup, to faithfully recreate Ruan Mei's aloof and subtly enigmatic aura, I specifically selected bright green contact lenses, blending soft pink tones for the eye makeup to harmonize with a black wig streaked with peacock cyan-green and orange-red highlights. Trimming the wig took some time; the bangs had to frame my facial contours closely to accentuate the expressive depth of my gaze. For props, the fan was an essential element; its hand-painted peach blossom motifs and cascading pink tassels blended seamlessly with the overarching Traditional Chinese style cosplay aesthetic. Although the white wing apparatus on my back carried noticeable weight, it introduced a wonderful layer of fantasy dimension to this Anime-style photography set.
The set was styled with dark wooden lattice window frames, draped with purple sheer gossamer on the left and adorned with pink faux blossoms throughout. The lighting featured a classic warm-and-cool contrast: a warm front key light combined with a cool background rim light, giving the subject striking three-dimensional pop within the frame. Seated on a white plush rug holding the round fan, or reclining upon it to explore overhead top-down perspectives, I experimented with varied postures. Because the skirt hemline is relatively short, reclining required careful control over my range of motion—staying relaxed while preserving clean silhouette lines. Subtle adjustments, such as tilting my fingertips or half-veiling my face with a gloved hand, evoked entirely different moods. During the shoot, a pipa prop and pink tassels also entered the frame, further deepening the classical Chinese atmosphere.
"No matter when they bloom, the day will come when the wind sweeps them away..." Shooting this Plumblossom Letter set gave me a far deeper appreciation for this line. Petals falling from branches is not a conclusion, but a cycle flowing in harmony with nature. In portraying Ruan Mei, I strived to capture that serene clarity of watching blossoms bloom and wither. Cosplay is never merely putting on an outfit; it is about drawing near to the character's inner psyche in those few seconds before the lens. The texture of fabrics, the tactile touch of props, and even the warmth of studio lights all helped me immerse myself into her persona. This photoshoot was a truly special journey, and I hope the final photos convey the unique elegance and tranquil poise inherent to this character.
