The shooting schedule at Zhongshan AS Studio was relatively tight, and with crowds packing the venue, finding suitable angles took some time. The character styling for Barbie: A Fairy Secret focuses on pieced purple reflective fabrics, making it essential to shoot where lighting was ample and backdrops were less chaotic.
Matching the character's aesthetic took about an hour of morning hair and makeup, primarily coordinating color accents across the eye makeup with blue colored contacts and topping it off with a slender gold headband. The biggest practical challenge was the large wings on my back; broad and wind-catching, even slight air currents caused them to flutter, making precise shutter timing and constant repositioning crucial to avoid revealing the mounting hardware. The dress fabric possessed great tactile depth—white tulle edged the skirt hem, creating shimmering movement when walking or lifting the skirt. However, the silky material caused the silver belt to slip easily, needing regular readjustment. The silver lace-up heels were also demanding; extended walking left strap marks across the instep, but to elongate the leg lines when swishing the skirt, wearing them was well worth the effort.
Working with the photographer's low-angle framing required good posture, keeping the back straight and legs engaged. In the first shot, I angled my torso sideways, tossing the hem outward with one hand while shifting weight to the back foot with the front toes lightly touching down. This low vantage point yielded flattering bodily proportions and let the skirt expand gracefully, earning its spot as the cover photo. To isolate the subject from passersby and venue trusses, wide apertures provided soft background separation. In post-processing, adjustments focused on neutralizing the venue's warm, yellowish lighting, restoring true color temperatures so the purple metallic luster could pop authentically. Despite the physical strain of two to three hours of continuous shooting in tight crowds, the resulting flow of the dress, radiant lighting, and natural posture made this Zhongshan AS Studio outing a truly memorable record.
