For this Sailor suit cosplay shoot of Wakaba Mutsumi (Wakaba Mutsumi cosplay from BanG Dream! and Ave Mujica), the pre-shoot preparations were heavily centered on mastering fine details. To achieve a visual presentation that best fits the character, the texture and trim of the wig were of paramount importance. After putting on the light mint-green wig, the hairline and fringe thickness needed to be readjusted according to the character's head and facial proportions. In particular, the straight blunt bangs had to fall precisely between the brows and eyes, gently curled with a flat iron to give a natural contour, while the elongated white barrette on the right side served as a visual accent, adding layered dimension to the styling. For makeup, to complement the mint-green hair, the eye makeup adopted soft, warm translucent tones paired with yellow contact lenses to accentuate the gaze's focal point. Meanwhile, the base makeup emphasized a pristine, fair complexion complemented by a soft flush of blush sweeping beneath the eyes, giving the face a gentler touch.
The outfit itself was a classic sailor-style dress with a crisp white base accented by clean grey striping. The slender dark-blue bow across the chest, double-breasted circular gold buttons, and matching waistbelt established dynamic color layers. The pleated design of the skirt moved with airy grace during walking; the juxtaposition of white and deep blue, combined with grey stripes along the hem, gave the attire rich tactile texture on camera. Coordinated White stockings and glossy black loafers not only elongated the leg lines, but also completed the entire ensemble seamlessly.
The shooting took place indoors against a window letting in soft natural daylight, beside a Christmas tree frosted with faux snow. The centerpiece was a giant brown-and-white plush animal bolster; lying across it created an intriguing tactile contrast between the soft plush and the structured fabric of the dress. When posing upright, to evoke the character's serene ambiance, I rested my chin gently on one hand, letting my center of gravity settle naturally. When seated, crossing my legs visually elongated my silhouette, and casually brushing a strand of hair with one hand allowed us to capture more vivid, candid frames. The lighting angle was crucial: subtle side rim backlighting crisply carved out my contours while making the mint-green hair and golden gaze pop vividly within the frame.
The entire shoot truly tested body control, as the silhouette of the dress and the spread of the pleated skirt had to remain within precise bounds to avoid appearing bulky before the lens. Regulating my breathing, slowing the cadence of movements, and allowing my eyes to settle into a quiet, slightly detached stillness were elements I continuously practiced throughout the session. Though the plush backdrop was soft, keeping my back straight was essential to ensure posture elegance across diverse high and low angles. Being able to capture this styling through the lens was a thoroughly rewarding endeavor.
