Shooting a full set of photos in this tactical action style for the first time, I was actually quite anxious during the pre-production stage. After all, I previously shot mostly conventional fresh 2D styles or ancient Chinese themes; abruptly switching to a hardcore military tactical theme like Delta Force, coupled with the unique, capable aura of the character 'Mai Xiaowen,' honestly left me with no confidence before shooting whether the final outcome would meet expectations. That is also why I mentioned striving for texture in post-processing in the post, as I well knew that studio or location shooting is just the foundation, while the overall atmosphere and mood rely heavily on color grading in post.
Let's talk about the styling this time. To match the character Hackclaw, I chose a silver-gray wig with rich layering, leaving some stray strands in front to enhance the character's agility and decisiveness. The mask is a custom black tactical mask, and the breather valve details were lightly weathered—after all, in a wasteland or tactical environment, gear that looks too brand-new feels unrealistic. The upper body features a blue-and-black camo jacket paired with an army green tactical chest rig vest. Although the chest rig looks compact, it offers plentiful mounting points, and adding several tactical training knives to the side added some visual weight. To replicate the character's traits, the black-and-white checkered tactical scarf around the neck was essential—it adds visual layers while flattering the neck and shoulder lines.
For the lower half, I selected tight black leather pants. The advantage of leather pants is that during high-angle shots or half-crouching poses, they flatter the leg lines exceptionally well. Combined with distressed cutout details, they visually highlight that blend of toughness and casual coolness in this Hardcore outfit. The paired black tactical boots and gloves were also indispensable; the armor over the knuckles of the gloves provides solid visual support when holding the prop gun.
Speaking of the prop gun, this black semi-automatic pistol model was definitely the soul of this Tactical style cosplay shoot. I tried a wide variety of weapon handling stances—such as aiming down sights, low-ready stances, leaning against walls, and crouching. As it was my first time, the movements were inevitably a bit stiff, but to convey tactical pressure and character confidence, I did my best to adjust my posture and gaze. In particular, for the shot crouching on the elevated platform, finding the right camera angle took repeated trials; the ground and steps were cold and hard, but seeing the final result made all the effort feel worthwhile.
In post-processing, I deliberately asked the photographer to retain the gritty texture and weathered surfaces of the architectural background, uniformly dimming overall brightness and lowering environmental saturation. This low-saturation, blue-gray cool tone effectively highlights the subject. Especially when rendering the textures of the leather pants and tactical gear, adding high-contrast sharpening made the edges crisper, bringing out an authentic military-enthusiast aesthetic. With the atmosphere dialed to the max, this was exactly the 'wasteland tactical' or 'black ops' vibe I initially envisioned in this Anime-style photography.
From scouting locations to the final delivery, this photo set involved immense communication and experimentation. As a newcomer venturing into this genre for the first time, I didn't pursue exaggerated filters or flashy visual effects, preferring real scenes and authentic gear to recreate the character's tenacity. While knowing I still have shortcomings and that my movements could be smoother, this was a truly valuable breakthrough. Every attempt at a new style deepens my understanding of cosplay—it is not just about wearing a costume, but finding that authentic state of the character before the lens. I hope this completed set conveys some of my dedication to this character and this style.
