This photo set as a whole revolves around the theme of welcoming the New Year, blending the character's traits with traditional Chinese elements to create a festive and joyful holiday atmosphere. The main direction established before the shoot was to express the character's lively and vibrant side, so high-saturation bright tones were used as much as possible from costume color schemes to scene props.
In terms of costume preparation, this modified version of a Chinese-style dress appears exceptionally exquisite. The upper body features a black base spliced with white borders and a red outer vestment, with fine embroidered patterns on the frog buttons and cuff edges. A broad light-blue belt at the waist divides the body proportions while adding a cool color contrast to the overall red-and-black palette, balancing it visually. The lower body is a patchwork short skirt paired with white tights and platform black ankle boots, retaining the character's capable traits while adding a touch of maidenly softness. The overall cut is clean and sleek, allowing me to execute various movements with relative ease during shooting.
Next, the hairstyle and makeup were key guarantees for fidelity. Although the long pink hair is highly recognizable, achieving this curved double-bun hairstyle required considerable effort in fixing and styling the wig. The ring-shaped hair accessories retained beside both ears enhance the character's signature recognition. To fit the lively Anime New Year atmosphere, I specifically chose makeup that enhanced eye contours, emphasizing eye highlights and false lashes to make my eyes look clearer, more radiant, and aligned with the character's own personality setting.
Props were also crucial to the visual presentation of this photo set. The first props used in shooting were the two scrolls held in hand, featuring gold lettering on a red background with intricate subtle patterns; the written phrases "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (May you be prosperous) and "Wan Shi Ru Yi" (May all go according to your wishes) directly highlighted the auspicious New Year theme. The inclusion of gold ingots enriched the frame even further—from small ingots cupped in hands at first to large gold ingots held in arms later, these represent classic and symbolic motifs in traditional Chinese culture. Additionally, small strings of red lanterns brought a lively vibe to the visuals.
As for the scene setup, a great deal of effort was poured into it. Dark carved Chinese wooden windows were used as a backdrop wall, with a layer of semi-transparent white calligraphic fabric draping down in front. This design of occlusion and light transmission is clever: it hides clutter in the dark background while creating an Oriental misty beauty and classical elegance in the frame. A white crane sculpture was placed on one side of the frame, harmonizing beautifully with red plum blossoms, festive spring couplets, and artfully arranged vases in the set, constructing a photo shoot space combining reality and poetic imagination.
In actual lighting setup during shooting, the photographer selected large-area soft lights to handle shadows. This not only preserves natural light-and-shadow transitions on the face, but also brings out the vivid layering of high-contrast colors on the costume—red, blue, black, and gold. In terms of posing guidance, rather than pursuing dramatic jumps, I mostly adopted standing, sitting, or side profile poses interacting with props. This relaxed and lifelike posing approach is suitable for presenting the character's relaxed, lively daily atmosphere, avoiding an overly forced or stiff look.
Although there was a lot to prepare—from costume styling and scene setup to pose ideation—seeing the final photo results surpassed expectations in both color saturation and stylistic presentation. The combination of red with the character created a vibrant visual impact. This was an insightful experience blending a gaming character with real-world festive vibes in this March 7th cosplay, and I hope to pass along this joyful feeling filled with New Year flavor to everyone.
