Taking advantage of the rare double celebration of Teachers' Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival, I brought out this long-conceptualized ensemble to recreate Kamishirasawa Keine from Touhou Project.
The iconic square scholar hat served as the visual centerpiece of the entire styling. The red ribbon bow perched on top is the true soul of the look; achieving a balance of structural stiffness that could still flutter gracefully in the breeze required considerable effort in back reinforcement and shaping. The deep navy suit jacket paired with a crisp white shirt boasts sharp, tailored contours. I selected this outfit specifically for its rigorous academic silhouette, which impeccably mirrors Keine-sensei's profession as an educator at the Human Village's Terakoya. To honor the character's premise, I specially chose a pair of slender wire-rimmed glasses paired with straight silvery-white hair to express an intellectual, grounded temperament as faithfully as possible.
In canon lore, Keine-sensei is a Half-beast of knowledge and history—gentle and refined by day, yet transforming into a Hakutaku under the full moon with the power to devour and create history. That stark contrast between her everyday gentle rationality and monumental power at critical moments creates an exhilarating duality. During the shoot, I aimed for postures that conveyed quiet contemplation, such as lightly resting a hand under my chin or turning sideways to gaze into the distance. Although today is Teachers' Day, I'd like to remind all Touhou fans: with tonight's Mid-Autumn full moon, make sure your doors are securely locked, lest the Hakutaku drops by for an unexpected history lesson (laughs).
The shooting location was a corridor lined with floor-to-ceiling windows, making exquisite use of the slanted afternoon natural light. Backlighting caught the silvery-white wig, illuminating the edges of each hair strand with a gorgeous halo, granting the overall frame deeply satisfying light and shadow layering. Because the costume is quite structured and heavy, maintaining an upright posture across a prolonged shoot proved to be quite an endurance test, but the final frames rendered every second worthwhile.
From preparing garments and props to communicating camera framing on set, the entire creative process was immensely fulfilling. The amplified joy of Teachers' Day crossing paths with the Mid-Autumn Festival simply had to be shared with fellow fans. While savoring mooncakes and admiring the full moon, I hope everyone takes a moment to remember this Half-beast teacher who tirelessly guards human history.
