Ever since deciding to do this 2P color cosplay set for Azure Spirit Dream Reimu, I kept imagining how well it would fit a summer waterside setting. Compared to the classic red-and-white shrine maiden outfit, the blue-and-white 2P color palette brings a completely different cool and clear feel, making it especially suitable for bright outdoor environments with water features.
Let's start with costume details. The main hue is a blue fabric featuring jacquard patterns, offering rich visual texture rather than a plain, textureless blue. White ruffles are spliced along the cuffs and skirt hem, accentuated with contrasting gold lines—this intricate layering nicely neutralizes any monotony of deep blue. Under natural outdoor light, the blue appears vibrant, while white lace edges frame the silhouette beautifully. The waist features a color-matched fabric tie design; though it looks loose, it requires careful adjustment to present a crisp yet graceful curve.
The giant bow on the head is the absolute soul of this look. To highlight the features of Azure Spirit Dream, I adorned the bow with many blue-and-white flowers and tassel decorations. The tassels sway gently with movement, adding dynamic energy and detail to static shots. However, because the headpiece is quite large, managing center gravity during shooting was tricky; I had to constantly adjust head angles to avoid the headpiece tilting ungracefully. The hairstyle keeps the classic long straight black hair with blunt bangs; although shooting outdoors in summer makes sweating easy, keeping the hair neat was essential to recreate the character's aura.
Regarding makeup, to complement this blue-and-white costume, I chose a clean, translucent base. Eye makeup avoided heavy colors, emphasizing instead the contrast between eyeliner and iris. Wearing translucent blue contacts made the gaze look more focused and echoed the blue outfit. The lip color was a natural dried rose shade to prevent a heavy look from clashing with the fresh overall atmosphere.
For props, I held a long black rod decorated with flowers at the top, connected to white serrated ribbons. There happened to be a breeze during shooting, and the long ribbons fluttered with the wind, adding a lovely sense of flow. However, long external props like this can easily tangle in clothing or headpieces when turning, so extra care was needed while stepping and posing to keep ribbon lines flowing smoothly without disrupting costume contours.
The location was set by the water near an old wooden bridge with metal grid decking, right next to shimmering water. Fallen leaves and shallow water plants floated on the surface, paired with mottled gray concrete walls and lush green bamboo forests in the background, providing rich background layers. Standing directly on concrete steps by the water and utilizing reflection compositions when the water was calm became one of my favorite expressions in this set. Half-body close-ups and full-body action snaps also fully showcased the costume cut and waist tailoring. The skirt hem fell just below the knees, revealing white lace short socks and black platform Mary Janes, giving the lower body a crisp, grounded look.
Around noon, lighting was quite intense, but we specifically chose shaded areas under trees, using dappled light spots to evoke a light summer mood. The blue dress reflected beautiful tones in the sunlight, while water ripples reflected on the skirt and steps, perfectly highlighting the summer-exclusive theme of Azure Spirit Dream. Special care was needed on the gridded bridge surface to prevent platform Mary Jane heels from getting caught in gaps, but the resulting photos made it totally worth it.
In the final photos, whether standing in the middle of the water, looking back on the bridge, or sitting by the edge using water reflections for framing, everything beautifully recreated my vision for 2P color Reimu. Embracing the fresh blue-and-white palette away from traditional red-and-white visuals, interpreting another side of the character through cool water and pure blue in hot summer made for a deeply satisfying shoot. From embroidered details and accessory tassels to overall color harmony, presenting a different shrine maiden image for Touhou Project in front of the lens serves as a perfect record for my Summer cosplay works this season.
