Preparing the styling, makeup, and props for this Patchouli cosplay (Anime cosplay) look from Touhou Project took considerable time. The Vintage dress features multiple tiers of lace, and the blue-green bows at the neckline and chest required repeated adjustments to achieve the most character-accurate state. The mob cap covered in complex lace trimming was particularly tricky to secure firmly. The core prop during the shoot was a glowing book. To faithfully recreate the spellbook effect frequently seen in canon and fan concepts, we installed a concealed light source inside the book. During the shoot, the gaffer adjusted the key light positioning to cast upward from below, neatly illuminating my facial contours, fingertips, and the White tights along my legs. Finding the right angle was crucial to capturing the fan-shaped gradient glow radiating across the pages.
The first photo captures a freeze-frame of looking forward while adjusting the glasses; with its centered composition and direct eye contact, this shot best embodies the character's scholarly persona. The overall atmosphere also matched the indoor shut-in theme: set before dark-toned wooden furniture, accompanied by red background curtains and a carved wooden chair, it highlighted the character's attributes splendidly. We encountered a few challenges during the shoot; because the light source was placed inside the book and remained very close to my face, staring into it for long periods was somewhat dazzling, requiring frequent blinking and breaks to rest my eyes. Furthermore, the dress features a large, voluminous bustle underneath; when sitting down on the chair, I had to continuously smooth out the skirt hem to keep the pleats natural without obscuring the texture along the thighs. Portraying Patchouli requires conveying that sedentary, sickly, and reclusive demeanor of someone who rarely leaves her library. Through the harmony of costume, makeup, and lighting, we strived to faithfully recreate this essence. This Anime cosplay experience was truly engaging—especially experimenting with this glowing prop lighting, where the penetrative illumination highlighted the sheer translucency of the Vintage dress and the delicate texture of the White tights, creating a rich vintage aesthetic.
