The Librarian of the Unmoving Great Library, Patchouli Knowledge, is finally here to meet everyone in a more comfortable manner. For this Touhou Project Patchouli cosplay, a lot of trade-offs were made regarding costume details. To recreate that elegant yet slightly lazy atmosphere, I chose this soft-toned Lolita outfit featuring a large number of ruffles and lace decorations. The patchwork of light purple and grayish pink is incredibly comfortable.
The wig features light purple twin tails with straight bangs and long straight hair, which, paired with the iconic semi-rimless glasses, completely maxes out 'Mukyu's' traits. The temples of these glasses are very thin, so the angles had to be carefully adjusted during the shoot to avoid reflections. The rhinestone necklace and clavicle chain on my neck add a touch of refinement, preventing the neckline from looking empty. The essence of the entire costume lies in the layered lace at the sleeves and collar, where white semi-translucent tulle weaves together with pink-purple satin fabric, bringing a youthful lightness without losing the character's profound setting.
This time, I mainly shot several sets of photos with different atmospheres. Poses such as sitting while holding a book, bending one knee, and half-reclining while looking up are all intended to present Patchouli's book-loving, intelligent, and slightly sickly otaku vibe. Combined with white over-the-knee socks and plush slippers, it adds a few layers of casual coziness inside her own library compared to traditional classical formal wear.
The shooting environment was an indoor exhibition. The overhead lighting leaned cool-toned, forming a perfect warm-and-cool contrast with the warm pink attire. During post-processing for these Convention photos, I slightly lowered the highlights to preserve the translucency of the ruffled tulle on the skirt hem while trying my best to maintain a natural skin tone. Although the exhibition hall floor was reflective stone, it unexpectedly captured a sense of depth as if being inside a real great library.
To capture the spirit of a character well, the costume is certainly important, but makeup and body language cannot be neglected either. This time, I specially chose a soft matte lipstick to make the overall temperament gentler. When cradling a book or gently pulling the skirt hem, one can truly feel Patchouli's quiet, intellectual beauty. Shooting this kind of everyday-vibe Anime cosplay is actually harder to master in terms of relaxation compared to gorgeous combat gear.
