Watching the goldfish glide through the tank, that memorable line immediately echoed in my mind: 'A fish's memory lasts only seven seconds, but in every seven seconds, I love you.' To capture an outdoor set steeped in this singular atmosphere, I chose to portray Aoi from the Galgame You and Me and Her: A Love Story.
First, regarding styling prep: to capture her dreamy yet fragile essence, I selected a pink-orange gradient wig laced with subtle shimmer. Sculpting that iconic looped ahoge atop her head took considerable time with hairspray and a flat iron, aiming for an organic three-dimensional silhouette before the camera. For eye makeup, reddish-brown contact lenses sharpened eye focus, paired with lush lower lashes and soft contouring to align the facial features seamlessly with the character. Wardrobe-wise, I wore a basic white sailor-collared blouse layered with a beige knit cardigan; this everyday school attire created an intriguing textural contrast against the unique aquarium setting.
The greatest challenge during this shoot lay in ambient lighting and glass reflections. The tank cast strong overhead illumination while its surface easily mirrored camera outlines and reflections. To avoid ruining the immersion, the photographer and I repeatedly calibrated standing marks and angles, employing a polarizing filter to cut unwanted glare while preserving faint, hazy double reflections that enhanced layered depth between illusion and reality. The moment I pressed my hand against the glass as schools of fish darted past my fingertips, the tactile cool of the tank and the flowing interplay of light pulled me instantly into character.
Throughout the shoot, I contemplated how to convey the entanglements of fleeting memories through body language. I softened my gaze, holding a faint, enigmatic trace of a smile, striving to communicate through the lens as though speaking to someone across a distant divide. The orange-gold fish and my pink hair forged a striking color dynamic against the cool aquatic backdrop, infusing the frame with narrative tension without superfluous embellishment.
As a cosplayer who frequently works on location, I know well that crafting a high-caliber set demands not merely thorough gear prep, but complete emotional immersion. Every shutter click records more than just an image—it marks an ongoing dialogue with the character across a dedicated space. From ironing garments and trimming the wig to dialing in lighting and emotional direction on site, I immersed myself in every step. Without flashy special effects or elaborate props, I hope the pure light, color, and heartfelt vulnerability bring the written emotion of this classic story vividly to life.
