The "Kotori and Wedding Kotori" project, planned for nearly a year, has finally materialized and landed on this commemorative milestone. From the initial impulse at the beginning of the year to recreate Kotori Kanbe's wedding dress form to gradually implementing it, though interrupted at times, the vision for this project never ceased. As the title suggests, this is not just a simple Kotori Kanbe cosplay shoot, but a cross-temporal tribute to a work and character I hold dear.
Looking back at my feelings toward Rewrite, a classic Key Galgame, the story stands out uniquely among visual novels. Both its grand world-building and its delicate depiction of ordinary individuals' destinies remain vivid in my memory years later. As an essential companion in the early story, Kotori's gentleness carries a penetrating resilience. For this reason, in presenting this Wedding dress cosplay, I abandoned the luxurious and grand feel of traditional bridal gowns, opting instead for lighter, flowy fabrics and soft pale tones to recreate that fragile delicacy from the original artwork that feels as if it could disperse with the wind at any moment.
Fabric selection and the completion of custom craftsmanship were the most rewarding aspects of this project for me. This light champagne-colored luminous satin bridal gown features a puffy, multi-layered folded skirt specifically designed to maintain a three-dimensional silhouette even when posing statically. The creation of the lace bridal veil also took considerable thought; to ensure it draped into elegant curves naturally when holding the bouquet, I had to carefully adjust its attachment points to avoid being pulled out of place. The flower crown on my head and the bouquet in hand were handmade by selecting white-and-pink flowers and ribbons closely matching the color palette of the original artwork.
During the live shoot at the convention, some unexpected and interesting situations arose. Since our booth was right next to a bustling aisle, many passing visitors stopped to watch or politely asked for photos. To prevent the train of the gown from being stepped on, I practically had to move around holding up the heavy hem all day, while balancing the bouquet and veil. Fortunately, the photographer was amazing, finding ideal angles within the limited space to capture many shots I'm personally very pleased with. Especially in the photos holding the bouquet and picture frame, the soft light fell perfectly across my face and gown, impeccably displaying the pearlescent shimmer of the dress and the delicate lace details.
Some subtle details are hard for audiences outside the camera to notice. For instance, to recreate Kotori's distinctive light brown gradient hair color, I specifically gave the wig extensive multi-layered trimming and custom re-dyeing. When wearing the flower crown, we used specialized pins and securing techniques so as not to flatten the wig. Although this outfit looks ethereal and fairy-like, it is actually quite heavy—particularly the weight of the layered skirt, which required considerable strength to support when crouching or turning sideways, demanding precise control over poses to maintain balance.
In any case, this "now out-of-print" project has finally concluded smoothly. After wearing a wedding dress all day, taking off the makeup at home and looking in the mirror back in everyday clothes felt like waking from a dream. This combination of a specific setting, specific props, and specific lighting became a unique memory at this point in time. Being able to express my understanding of a classic Key work through a medium I love is in itself the greatest joy cosplay brings me. And for next year, the seed of the next project is already quietly sprouting in my heart.
