[Suoming Cosplay] Crimson Moonlight in Wuthering Waves: Unlocking a New Japanese Style Red Hair Interpretation

From early planning and gathering references to procuring costumes, props, and setting up hair and makeup, a lot of effort went into crafting this set for Suoming. Because her overall visual style carries a strong sense of Japanese style fantasy, I felt that showcasing that mysterious yet gorgeous temperament in a photo studio required far more than simply changing into clothes and striking a pose.

First comes the hairstyle and makeup. For the red hair, a bright primary red wig was deliberately chosen. The Red hair double buns atop the head really tested the stylist's grip and securing skills. For hair accessories, golden bells with subtle teal details were selected, forming a wonderful color echo with the black rose choker around the neck. Eye makeup wasn't made overly intense; instead, warm-toned eyeshadow was used to deepen eye contours, paired with red contacts to make the gaze appear more spirited.

Costume styling was another key focus this time. The overall design features a black, white, and red color-blocked pattern. The outer robe uses a black fabric with subtle woven patterns—understated at first glance, but showcasing rich texture once studio lights hit. The inner lining of the coat uses a highly saturated primary red, creating a striking visual contrast against the black. Sleeve covers are made of black velvet adorned with gold embroidered patterns, small details that beautifully convey exquisite Oriental aesthetics. The skirt hem features an asymmetrical cut, perfectly accentuating leg lines when walking or sitting.

Props used during the shoot were primarily a white umbrella and a black folding fan. The umbrella features bamboo ribs and excellent translucency when opened; the photographer specifically allowed warm background light to pass through the umbrella surface, creating a soft semi-transparent texture. Holding this umbrella functioned both as a prop and an essential composition tool—during solo shots when unsure where to place hands, resting the umbrella over a shoulder or holding it half-open instantly brought the frame to life.

Set design was meticulously arranged. Wooden platforming, traditional lattice doors and windows, plus a massive warm yellow full moon lamp in the background instantly maximized the atmosphere. To create an ethereal, dreamlike visual experience, we placed several fog machines with dry ice on the wooden platform and lower floor, which not only enhanced damp surface reflections but also enveloped the lower portion of the shoot in swirling mist. When selecting photos, everyone agreed that dry ice fog combined with full moon backdrop conferred a serene yet distant beauty to the scene.

Poses and facial expressions underwent fine adjustments throughout the shoot. Because the skirt hem and wide sleeves were quite voluminous, movement ranges for sitting and standing poses had to be carefully controlled. For instance, when sitting, I utilized platform height differences to highlight leg proportions; when standing with the umbrella, I paid attention to adjusting the inclination angle of the handle to ensure it wouldn't block light on my face and chest. Making these pose adjustments was actually far more challenging than simply striking pre-set poses.

On another side note, while the wooden platform looked fantastic on camera, sitting or kneeling directly on it for long stretches on shoot day was actually freezing cold. We had to take several break intervals to keep my condition at its peak. The entire shoot took over half a day, and post-production color grading was equally critical: to distinguish the red saturation from the warm moonlight behind, I communicated extensively with the retoucher. I am personally very satisfied with the final texture achieved. Being able to show another side of the character Suoming from Wuthering Waves through this Cosplay photoshoot was a truly delightful creative experience for me.
