At this Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo, I finally brought Dorothy's Qipao styling to life on camera.
The tailoring of this adapted Qipao diverges from traditional cuts: while retaining the mandarin collar and frog buttons, it features broad cutouts across the chest and waist covered by a layer of semi-sheer lace tulle. The cuffs showcase delicate branch-motif embroidery, and pink tassels drape from the waistline, yielding an abundance of nuanced textures under shifting light. For the lower half, the hem sports an asymmetrical high-low cut with deep side slits, allowing effortless movement while beautifully showcasing the lace borders and White stockings.
The wig was a radiant vibrant pink, trimmed with straight blunt bangs in the front and styled into double odango buns on both sides. For hair accessories, I selected a rhinestone headband and infinity-symbol hairpins, paired with blue-purple contact lenses to complement the makeup palette. My prop was a transparent umbrella edged with delicate lace trim; framed against the backlight of the convention center's floor-to-ceiling glass windows, it produced an ethereal, luminous translucency.
The shoot itself was quite a physical challenge. To showcase all the garments' intricate details, the photographer framed several distinct angles. The first set had me seated atop a black rolling suitcase, crossing my legs to flatter the heels and leg lines. The second set explored a kneeling posture, holding the umbrella aloft with one hand while resting the other against my chest, shot from a subtle low upward angle. The third set captured dynamic standing poses, stepping forward with one leg lifted so the skirt hem fluttered naturally, with the high side slit revealing the lace trims and White stockings.
Wearing this outfit also came with a few practical tricks. Because the slits rise quite high, wearing proper anti-exposure safety shorts underneath is essential, and the anti-slip silicone bands on the thigh-high socks had to be set for maximum comfort to prevent slipping. While the pearl ankle straps on the heels looked gorgeous, wearing them over long hours pinched the ankles, so I took every opportunity to sit on the suitcase and rest between takes. The clear lace umbrella looked breathtaking against backlighting, but could easily cast shadows across the face, requiring continuous angle micro-adjustments to let the natural light fall evenly across my facial features.
The convention venue was crowded, requiring patience to scout relatively uncluttered camera spots. The overall color grading of these convention shots favored a cool, pristine white tone with crisp dimensional lighting, faithfully recreating the character's aura. In anime photography, I deeply appreciate aesthetics that balance gentle softness with striking visual tension. Cosplaying this look was also a creative exploration of how the character would feel in a Qipao—the harmony of white and pink truly delivered an airy, graceful elegance.
