Wearing this Violet Evergarden cosplay Vintage dress, I took advantage of our outdoor time at the Firefly ACG Expo to shoot a series of Convention photos. The sunlight was exceptionally intense at the time, and the direct light hitting the hemline and glass curtain walls created a stark, defined lighting structure. To balance the contrast ratio, I brought along a black umbrella and a suitcase as props. The black umbrella was not only a shading tool, but also blocked out stray light in front of the lens to produce a beautiful foreground blur.
Putting on this outfit was actually quite intricate, particularly the black metallic-textured gloves; while they look elegant, wearing them and gesturing takes noticeable effort. The green gem brooch on the chest, the white ruffled collar, and the long pleated skirt all lean into a vintage, graceful aesthetic. The petticoat is also quite wide, requiring careful navigation when moving through crowds. To match the overall texture, I selected brown platform boots and a matching vintage suitcase; when holding it upright in the sunlight, you must steady your posture, or your balance will easily look unsteady.
The photographer used a wide aperture in this set, and the blurred hand reaching toward the lens in the first photo conveys great tension and storytelling. The subsequent two wide-angle shots leveraged the vertical reflections off the building's glass curtain wall alongside sharp ground shadows, creating a cool and crisp visual effect. To ensure quality shots during the session, we repeatedly tested subtle hand placements in the same spot—especially the way the fingers exerted grip on the suitcase handle—striving to naturally recreate the solemn dignity of this attire.
Whenever wearing such a substantial costume, I am deeply thankful to the support staff who helped adjust the skirt hem and hair accessories. Because these are outdoor Convention photos, having passersby enter the frame is inevitable, so we did our best to find relatively open pockets of space. For photos with this vintage aesthetic, the post-processing did not overly crush the exposure, choosing instead to preserve the translucent, luminous highlight atmosphere of the sunlight. I believe this authentic strong lighting actually accentuates the fabric's fine texture.
The reason for capturing this full-body shot holding the suitcase was simply because it fit the narrative aura inherent to the costume. Given the heavy foot traffic at the convention that day, outdoor shooting presented many uncontrollable variables. Being able to capture these natural expressions and poses within limited time was a true stroke of luck. It was a wonderful shoot, and I hope to encounter such splendid natural lighting again in the future.
